Across the U.S., tick populations are on the rise, and they’re not just a nuisance.
Warmer winters, expanding wildlife habitats, and shifting ecosystems are creating ideal conditions for ticks to thrive (and spread diseases like Lyme, anaplasmosis and babesia).

What does this mean for us in Allegheny County?
More ticks, in more places, for more of the year.

But there’s no need to get ticked off! Here’s how to stay ahead of them:
👕 Dress defensively
Light-colored clothing makes ticks easier to spot. Long sleeves, long pants, and tucking pants into socks may not win style points, but they work.

🧴 Use repellent strategically
Apply EPA-approved repellents with DEET, picaridin, or IR3535 on skin. Treat clothing and gear with permethrin for an added layer of protection.

🚶‍♂️ Stay on the trail
Ticks love tall grass, leaf litter, and brush. Keep to the center of trails and avoid brushing against vegetation.

🔍 Check early, check often
Do a full-body check after being outdoors, especially behind knees, under arms, along the hairline, and around the waist.

🚿 Shower within two hours
This helps wash off unattached ticks and gives you a chance to do a thorough inspection.

🐶 Don’t forget pets
Dogs can bring ticks into your home. Use vet-recommended preventatives and check them regularly.
