The Air Force One story in this piece deserves more attention than it is getting. Qatar offered a four hundred million dollar jet, structured so it would eventually go to Trump's own presidential library, rushed to be ready by July 4th at a retrofit cost up to a billion dollars. It flew to Turkey for a NATO summit, and Trump quietly swapped back to the old plane on the way home, offering a cover story about troops touring the new one in England.

The actual reason surfaced days later. The Secret Service had flagged the new jet as missing key defense modifications, unsafe to fly near Iran, and the Times sat on the story until Trump landed safely before publishing it. His response was to subpoena the paper's reporters, some served at home, demanding phone records and grand jury testimony to identify their sources.

A federal judge pushed back hard enough that DOJ withdrew the subpoenas. The White House later admitted the jet needed upgrades, confirming exactly what the reporting said.

Vance's appeal to racism shows how bigotry is the unifying principle of the MAGA GOP. There is no other mechanism that these people value more for holding together the new right. It's saying, "Sure, life is worse, but do you want some nonwhite guy with a foreign-sounding name in charge? I didn't think so." That's it. No promise of competence. No plan to build a better future.
