When one uses AI to 'make art', several ethical issues arise.
1. The 'training data' is often sourced (usually without consent) from artists. Images/videos returned are essentially mashups of different elements extracted from artworks in the 'dataset'. this is plagiarism. (10/?)

Learning Blender off of YouTube tutorials is hard.

As 3D artists, many times we don't have tools to learn what we don't know. Plus, difficulty.

Kane survived the hard mode of 3D all while exceeding expectations with soulful storytelling.

A 16-year-old in California taught himself free animation software in his bedroom and made a 9-minute YouTube video. Four years later, A24 built him a maze the size of half a football field and gave him two Oscar nominees to direct.

Backrooms opens in theaters tomorrow. Director Kane Parsons was born in 2005, the same year YouTube launched. He picked up a free program called Blender on his own, uploaded "The Backrooms (Found Footage)" in January 2022, and got 16,500 views in the first week. By the end of that month, the video had over 15 million views.

It all started with a single post on 4chan, an anonymous internet forum, back in May 2019. Someone asked for disquieting images that felt "off." Another anonymous user replied with a grainy photo of an empty room with sickly yellow walls and harsh fluorescent lighting. A third user added the caption: if you're not careful, you can "noclip out of reality" (a video game term for falling through walls) and end up trapped in an endless maze of yellow rooms that smell of damp carpet. For five years nobody could figure out where the photo was taken.

In May 2024, four people on Discord cracked the mystery using a tool called the Wayback Machine, which stores old versions of websites. It came from a 2002 renovation at 807 Oregon Street in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. That exact building had been a furniture store called Rohner's Home Furnishings for most of the 20th century.

From the A24 website: "A strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom." Parsons traced the lore right back to where the photo came from.

He designed every set in Blender first, then his team physically built the whole maze, all 30,000 square feet of corridors in Vancouver, Canada. They tested 50 shades of yellow before picking the right one, and crew members got lost inside their own set. Filming wrapped in August 2025 under the codename Effigy.

Producers include James Wan (the Saw and Conjuring franchises), Shawn Levy (Stranger Things), and Osgood Perkins (Longlegs). Cast as the leads: Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) and Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value). Parsons also co-wrote the music. At 20, he just became A24's youngest director ever.

Backrooms opened at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Some critics are already calling it the Blair Witch Project for the internet-horror generation.

And at that point "capitalism" becomes a tool that stifles scientific progress.

I hope this specimen can be studied if it hasn't been already.

But with those tiny human-like ears, it's basically a large-headed human with big, dark eyes.

This creates the uncanny valley effect, as it looks strangely human but not so much.

@FilmUpdates Definitely will happen if fans catch on to the story and it blows up on social media. At that point it's obviously going to go viral and everyone will see the movie.

It's already getting a lot of press so far, which is good news for the movie, it will NOT flop.

But there's a probability because the Blair Witch Project made numbers like that before, at $248 million.

They are similar movies and Kane has vision, fans + A24's massive budget.

Kane Parsons is also a talented musician and FL Studio producer (84k listeners). His music is deeply sentimental, sharp and metallic at times, but simple enough to sound like the emotional undertones of C418's Aria Math, Fire & Light by Actress, or the Fight Club movie score.

The thematic influence is actually quite clear when you think about it.

Backrooms has a Valve-esque corporation feel to it.

It is actually surprising.

You can see business intentions conflict with artistic and creative vision and how Jurassic World fails to grapple with this.

What happened was there was a crowd that reacted positively to Duncan surviving.

Then they ended up switching it at the last moment in the final movie.

Don't know if this is a case of business complexity taking over or bad management or what but I still have empathy for them.

Grappling with making one of the greatest movies of all time (JP) and failing to replicate its success over and over w/ financial pressure is something.

You just can't even wrap your head around the degree of detail that the Backrooms universe has and his incredible understanding of storytelling at such an early age.

When it's a skill that mostly takes filmmakers decades to master.

I feel like I liken this to the uncanny belly effect where like something just feels off and you instantly notice it.

And maybe all the other aspects of the movie were right. Maybe not, but this one in particular stands out.
