The Cholesterol Paradigm Shift
For millions of years, humans consumed animal fat as their primarily energy source. It wasn't until the 1950s with the research of Ancel Keys that this traditional diet was labeled harmful.
A new review by prominent cardiologist Abdullah Alabdulgader calls for an urgent reassessment of the role of cholesterol, particularly LDL, in coronary heart disease and atherosclerosis.
Alabdulgader points out increasing skepticism in the medical literature about the contribution of cholesterol to these conditions and challenges the mainstream medical narrative that's been dominating health guidelines for decades.
This paper digs into the history of cholesterol research, from its initial discovery to Ancel Keys' paradigm-shifting Seven Countries Study.
As many of you know, Keys selectively published data from his research which helped create widespread acceptance and pharmaceutical exploitation of the cholesterol hypothesis.
Statins, despite decades of use, have failed to significantly improve cardiovascular outcomes.
Statistical tools like relative risk reduction were used to exaggerate the benefits of statins, overestimate their effectiveness, and underplay side effects.
In fact, low LDL-C levels might increase susceptibility to diseases, including infections and cancer, while higher LDL-C levels could offer protective benefits.
We need a more accurate understanding of cholesterol's role in human health. And we need to abandon oversimplified narratives that ultimately serve to enrich pharmaceutical companies at the expense of human health.
