i watched the men of this country in the street.

when an american meets a stranger, he tilts his chin downward. one inch.
it is the down-nod. a silent signal that his throat remains protected.

when he meets an ally, he jerks his chin upward.
it is the up-nod. it exposes the vital line of the neck. a display of total trust.

my neighbor dave was working on his truck. a massive man holding a heavy wrench.

we had never spoken. i had kept my distance for months.

he turned and looked at me.

i stood straight on the asphalt. i took a deep breath and surrendered my defenses.

i whipped my chin straight toward the sky, exposing my entire throat to the open air.

dave watched me. he did not flinch.

he jerked his chin upward in return, exposing his own neck.

"sup, man."

no blood was spilled. no words were wasted.

yet two men had just placed their throats into each other's hands between a garage and a mailbox.

i walked home with my chest high, honored to be his brother.
