#UPDATE: Trump Nominates Devin Kennington as US Ambassador to Somalia

US President Donald Trump has nominated Devin Kennington to serve as the next United States ambassador to Somalia, a move that would restore a Senate-confirmed ambassador in Mogadishu for the first time since December 2025.

Kennington’s nomination is subject to approval by the US Senate before he can formally take up the post.

If confirmed, he would succeed Richard H. Riley, who left the position in December 2025 after the Trump administration recalled him to Washington. Since then, the US Embassy in Somalia has operated without a fully appointed ambassador.

Kennington was among a group of ambassadorial nominees announced by President Trump on Monday night.

The appointment comes as Washington continues to engage with Somalia on security cooperation, counterterrorism efforts, humanitarian assistance and political developments. The United States remains a major international partner of Somalia, particularly in operations against the al-Shabaab militant group and efforts to strengthen government institutions.

@umutcagrisariii This partnship goes well if Turkey also does not do any illegal Fishing, looting the natural Marine Resources. Somalia should watch out from such agreements with China and Turkey.

[Dr. C. Kâni Torun @torunkani]

Somaliland’s independence is not realistic in terms of ethnicity, religion sect and language. There is no difference between Somaliland and other parts of Somalia on above criteria. There is only one difference which is clan and federalism would perfectly suit. If every clan gets an independent state, Africa would have more than 500 states.

However, main problem with Somalia-Somaliland issue is Mogadishu. If Mogadishu solve political and security problems for other parts of Somalia, Somaliland would not have strong case for independence. So blaming Somaliland doesn’t help, let’s make Mogadishu works.

[Engr A.Fatah Samale @EngrSamaale]

@torunkani Perfectly analysed, thank you Ambassador for Supporting Unity of Somalia, and Turkey will always remain with side of Somali people at a difficulty time.

[Engr A.Fatah Samale @EngrSamaale]

@RepKeefe Somaliland is part of Somalia, and America can't tear Somalia a part. Respect our sovereignty & territorial integrty. There is no equity in the northern regions of Somalia- only one clan is dominant overthere whic cant be a nation seprate from Somlia.

[Engr A.Fatah Samale @EngrSamaale]

@DavidGreenhh @WalidPhares It is part of Somalia and it will remain forever. Cheap propganda!

[Engr A.Fatah Samale @EngrSamaale]

@e_durneika Northern part of Somalia, known us Somaliland, is an integral part of Somalia. No evil can Somalia tear a part.
Our sovereignty, territorial integrity are not open for discussion at all.
