アメリカの国立研究機関NIAID（NIHの一部）が、BioArtという無料の科学イラスト集を公開している。ウイルス、細胞、タンパク質、解剖、実験器具など、2,000点以上の高品質な図やアイコンを、プロのイラストレーターが手がけている。しかも無料だ。

論文の図、スライド、教育資料。きれいな模式図を一から描くのは、地味に時間もセンスも要る作業だ。そこに、そのまま使える部品が揃っているのはありがたい。研究者だけでなく、医療や科学をわかりやすく伝えたい人みんなの味方になる。

サイエンスコミュニケーションの土台は、正確さと伝わりやすさの両立にある。こうした公共の素材が整うほど、良い研究が正しく、そして美しく伝わる裾野が広がる。地味だけれど、じわじわ効くインフラだ。

きれいな図は、伝わる科学の入り口だ。

Early-onset colorectal cancer: where is it rising?

In some countries (e.g. New Zealand, England), colorectal cancer is only rising in younger (but not older) adults.

In others (Chile, Belarus), it's rising in younger and older adults, at similar rates.

And in others (China, India) colorectal cancer is only rising in older (not younger) adults.
