“When I turned back, my house was swept away.”
Sonika, 13, ran uphill carrying her 3 y.o. brother as floods tore through #Nepal. At least 17K children are affected. UNICEF is scaling up life-saving supplies & services, but much more is urgently needed. @unicef_nepal#NepalFloods
"I knew I was going to die."
Anjana Raja and Pattabiraman Venkatesan, a couple from the San Francisco Bay Area who were on a pilgrimage to Tibet, told CBS News' @RamyInocencio that they had just passed Timure headed to the Nepal-China border when what looked like a tsunami struck Wednesday while they were in their tour bus.
In what they said feels like a miracle, the couple made it out of the bus and ran for higher ground. https://t.co/SJ4f9Z08FF
Almost every house around it was destroyed in Nepal flood.
So why did this one survive?
I looked closely at the flood footage and noticed something I can’t quite explain.
The main mudflow appears to be moving right → left at very high speed.
But the drum in front of the house is moving left → right — in the opposite direction, and much more slowly.
So I started wondering if there was some kind of return flow around the house.
The water appears to have moved around the house, through the narrow gap between the house and the tree, and then rejoined the main flow.
My hypothesis:
The house may have been sitting in a relatively protected part of this flow, while its concrete structure helped it withstand the remaining impact.
But here’s the part I can’t explain:
What created that opposite-direction flow in the first place?
Was it the house itself, the tree , the surrounding terrain or any obstruction further downstream?
Or maybe combination of all of them?
Some people will probably say “God saved this house.”
Maybe.
But there may also be a physics explanation hidden in this footage that we’re not seeing yet.
If someone understands this, I would genuinely love to know what happened here.

His friend from upstream who called him to warn him about the flash floods and his quick thinking and decisive leadership saved the lives of everyone. He basically saved a generation of Nepalese 🙏
🇳🇵 The house was already sitting in the river, then a boy climbed onto the roof and started waving his T-shirt at the sky.
That was the only signal he had... Then a Nepal Army helicopter dropped in close enough for a soldier to grab his hand and pull him off the roof.
Hundreds are still missing, but thankfully this kids made it out.

Floods can change lives in hours. Across Nepal, lives, jobs & infrastructure have been swept away.
The danger remains. UNDP stands with Nepal, working alongside the @UN, national and international partners to support response & recovery efforts.

"Is anybody here? Is anybody here?"
Chinese first rescue team is searching the core disaster area of the Gyirong Port. The whole area is buried under the mud.
Rescuers knock and call out, trying to find anyone who may still be alive. Be careful and stay safe🙏
