If you want to live more than just one life, read voraciously. Reading lets you live the lives of others.
When you read a book about a physical activity, your brain simulates it as if you were actually doing it.
Neuroscience has shown that reading about running, for instance, engages the motor cortex.
Reading activates the same networks that process real emotions and bodily movements — the characters' experiences feel like your own. In a very real sense, they ARE your own experiences.
Deep reading also alters brain connectivity in a way that persists for days after finishing the book. A good novel physically reshapes parts of your brain.
There's a reason the great men of history read the great men who came before...
"An illiterate person who dies, let us say at my age, has lived one life, whereas I have lived the lives of Napoleon, Caesar, d'Artagnan. So I always encourage young people to read books, because it's an ideal way to develop a great memory and a ravenous multiple personality. And then at the end of your life you have lived countless lives, which is a fabulous privilege."
― Umberto Eco
COMMENTARY: Donald Trump’s decision to join Israel in a war against Iran is a far bigger strategic error than George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq.
It is also one with far greater strategic consequences.

Pressure your allies, question NATO, mock European leaders, slap tariffs on them, and ease sanctions on your adversaries.
Then start a war against the advice of top generals and without informing your partners.
And now you’re asking those same allies for help without even asking…
The irony.
Dear American friends, Europe is your closest ally, not your problem. And we have common enemies. At least that’s how it has been in the last 80 years. We need to stick to this, this is the only reasonable strategy of our common security. Unless something has changed.

OTD in 1939 Adolf Hitler began his special military operation to protect ethnic Germans from persecution by Poland.
Imagine such a bullshit excuse today
3 broke Swedish students forever changed online shopping with ONE genius idea:
"Buy now, pay later."
Swedish bankers laughed in their face.
But now they're heading for one of Europe's biggest IPOs EVER while American rivals can't even turn a profit.
Here's how they did it 🧵:
Hint for Americans: He wasn't a great businessman, it was just a TV show, he wasn't worth billions, he lied about his worth, he is not a great deal maker, a ghost writer wrote the book, he inherited 400 million and lost it all, he bankrupted 6 businesses, he cheated stockholders
For the journalists out there, those numbers are not tariffs. The European Union, e.g., has weighted average tariff rates of ~ 3% and arguably lower on US goods. So they are clearly including VATs and who knows what else?? This false reciprocity is nonsense. For more, see:
More than a week in Ukraine now.
➡️I visited Ukrainian defenders from Kyiv to Volyn, from Kharkiv to Cherkasy, from Donetsk to Dnipro, from Zaporizhzhia to Sumy.
➡️And I have to say: We still underestimate this brave nation.
➡️Russia is *not* on the “verge of winning”. Even though the US widely stopped supporting Ukraine.
➡️The Ukrainian army is strong, resisting and basically stopped most Russian offensives inside and outside the areas Russia annexed for now.
➡️Not because of western support and not even because of its dedicated leadership but because of its national popular will to keep fighting, supporting each other and keeping up logistics and weapons flows against all odds.
➡️At the same time, we still overestimate Russia.
➡️Yes. This dictatorship effectively produces meat and weapons to grind on the war. Russian infantry, Russian KABs and Russian drones of all types - especially optical control and Shaheds - remain a deadly threat to civilians and soldiers. But it is far from breaking the Ukrainian will and ability to resists.
➡️However, this comes with a terrible price for Ukraine. “War is our work now”, one soldier said to me. “We don’t know the difference anymore.” And another said: “There are three ways to leave the army. Without arms, without legs or feet first.” “I’m dead inside. Even if they would let me go, I wouldn’t survive one day in the real world”, a third said.
➡️This war broke millions of people. Not just fighting men, but families, whole communities and entire generations.
➡️None of this is the fault of the Ukrainian government which can either push its population to fight and suffer – or surrender to the fascist aggressor and become a Russian satellite “state” itself. Every real democracy and value-based nation would do the same as Ukraine. And most wouldn’t …
➡️It’s only Russia’s fault.
➡️At the beginning of the fourth year of the war, there is no end in sight – thanks to Western unwillingness to give Ukraine the weapons to make Russia withdraw to the 2014 or 2022 borders or at least accept an unconditional ceasefire. And we have those weapons or we could start producing them at any time. Also without the US and also without risking WW3.
➡️We just don’t want Ukraine to win.
➡️So the war will continue with Russia killing and wounding Ukrainian civilians and soldiers every day and Ukraine inflicting harsh casualties on a fascist nation that does not care about its own citizens to die for nothing.
➡️This is my personal impression after talking to dozens of men and women, mostly in uniform.
