@AstroTibs@b_baru70970@MegaPhilX That's true. The Comp just stands out to me as an attempt by the devs to leverage these things they weren't able to include originally which feel so out of place is because the original story never introduced many of these concepts to begin with, hence 7R having all this Comp DNA
@AstroTibs@b_baru70970@MegaPhilX The OG story isn't all that watertight either, Holy intervenes too late to stop Meteor which leads to dead Aerith summoning the Lifestream to tank it (something that has no prior explanation established whatsoever and just happens at the end of the game as a final resort)
@AstroTibs@b_baru70970@MegaPhilX I don't know if it's necessarily polluting the OG story. You can see from this chart that the concept of Angeal and Genesis were already in place during the OG's prod but went unused. Zack came in as a very late plot bandaid to fix all of the plotholes and thus wasn't fleshed out
@richterwilk@PaulCoffield4@MegaPhilX To solve all of the story's mysteries through Cloud's false identity arc. It's no wonder the Retrilogy has much more Zack in it, he came up so late as a literal bandaid to the plot he was kind of not fleshed out very much.
@richterwilk@PaulCoffield4@MegaPhilX Kitase came up with so many world concepts, Nomura with so many character ideas/personalities (and even occasional plot beats, like Aerith's death!) and Nojima was given the task to arrange all of these disparate things into a coherent script and came up with Zack late in dev.
@AstroTibs@b_baru70970@MegaPhilX A good portion of the reason the remake trilogy exists as it is, is specifically to more seamlessly introduce and blend in concepts of the Compilation into the original story so there's not this "discrepancy" between the perception of it and the perception of the OG game
@MegaPhilX@Sector_6_ It's also that it's hard to call it literal fanfiction considering the core staff of the original game (Nomura, Nojima, Kitase, Toriyama) is mostly still on it.
@Snackug0@PandaKingEX I don't say they will necessarily leave a "generational" impression when all is said and done but they will be regarded as a saga distinct from the original game, which is more of an impression if you ask me than being a replacement for the original game.
@Snackug0@PandaKingEX They certainly have the passion. a lot of what 7R's attempting with its story is not simply retread the OG, it's gambling on mysteries paying off in big ways much like the original did. The characterization of the cast is also very good, better than the OG game even.
@EclipticonA@PandaKingEX Ultimately, it's about what you're aiming to achieve. Xenoblade aims for scale and scope through its immense worlds, and 7R aims for a visceral and direct feel to its combat combined to spectacle setpieces and high fidelity graphics. Both aim to have spectacle, in different ways.
@EclipticonA@PandaKingEX High fidelity graphics also play a pretty big role: you put Xenoblade X and 7R next to each other and it's pretty obvious one games had much more money thrown at how it looked than the other
@Mega_Dad_Games@AHalfNickel On the other hand, it aims to also depict better elements of the original work, such as Cloud's progressive descent into being Sephiroth's full-on puppet, add new character scenes and dynamics absent from the original game to strengthen some of the original cast such as Yuffie
@Mega_Dad_Games@AHalfNickel Its sense of mystery, hence the additions of new mysterious elements like the Whispers and a Zack seemingly living beyond the event of his death as dictated by fate (2/2)
