In a brief interview before the upcoming First Thousand African Youth Summit on Food Systems and Agroecology, Bridget Mugambe, AFSA Programs Coordinator,@bmngabirano1 discusses the objectives of the summit, highlighting why this event is crucial for the continent’s future. In this interview, she explains that Africa’s large youth population is not yet fully engaged in agroecology and food sovereignty movements, despite the fact that the future of Africa’s #foodsystems lies in their hands. Bridget emphasizes that the summit aims to involve as many young people as possible in the transformation of Africa’s food systems by creating a platform for them to share ideas, exchange experiences, and propose actionable solutions to enhance food sovereignty.
Bridget underscores the importance of young people discussing issues such as #agroecology, social justice, good governance, indigenous knowledge, technology, and markets in order to find innovative ways to advance #foodsovereignty and enhance local economies. This broad scope ensures that the summit is not just a forum for highlighting challenges, but a true “Summit of Solutions,” where participants will come together to actively address the problems they’ve identified and develop strategies to advance agroecology across the continent.
Bridget also draws attention to the My Food is African campaign, which aims to increase the demand for African foods by reconnecting young people with the richness and diversity of their traditional food systems. She believes that by promoting the conscious consumption of African foods, the youth can trigger a major shift in support of the food sovereignty movement, and this summit will be an excellent opportunity to discuss and develop a common vision for promoting African foods.
