At @CR_UK we’ve made huge progress on cancer over the last 50 years – but cancer is still the defining health issue of our time.
Today we’ve launched our #CancerManifesto outlining the steps the next UK Government must take so that people can live #LongerBetterLives.
Visit our website to read it in full: https://t.co/OGaXdvRkyI.
Great news – this pledge will bring hope to many today. However, in order for this to be transformational, we must see sufficient funding and resources provided.
@CR_UK has been funding research in this area for many years, and proved over 20 years ago that almost all cervical cancers are caused by HPV, overturning previous studies that had underestimated the link.
I'm hopeful that a future without cervical cancer can be a reality for people all over the world.
“Smoking is not a habit, it’s a disease” - the Queen of Spain at #ECToH2023.
Inspiring words. She also spoke to the need to move “towards more prevention, particularly primary prevention”.
1/ The review from @JavedKhanCEO paved the way for UK Government to take action on tobacco - the leading cause of cancer & death in England.
The Government's response announced today by @NeilDotObrien will help to reduce smoking rates, but much more action is needed.
Urgent: England needs action on tobacco. I've asked the Health Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer to protect our loved ones from smoking-related cancers. Join me by adding your name today. https://t.co/OwRurcigvX

2/ This £20.6 bn is notably more than the £10.3 bn collected in tobacco duty in 2021/22.
That's why along with @AshOrgUK, we're calling on the UK Government to introduce a Smokefree Fund to help pay for the vital services and measures needed to help people stop smoking.
1/ 🆕 @AshOrgUK analysis shows smoking cost public finances £20.6 billion in 2022. Of this:
🏥£2.2 bn fell on our NHS
👨⚕️ £1.3 bn fell on social care
📉£17 bn was lost from a reduction in taxes & increased benefit payments arising from productivity costs

Tobacco is:
❌ the biggest cause of cancer
⚖️ a leading driver of health inequalities
💷 a huge cost to the NHS
@RishiSunak, @SteveBarclay & @NeilDotObrien must publish a bold and funded Tobacco Control Plan for England. #SmokefreeUK 🧵
It's #CervicalCancer Elimination Day of Action, a day to look forward to a world without #CervicalCancer!
To mark this, we're launching a report on our #WCC2022 working meeting to understand the key advocacy priorities for equitable HPV vaccination access https://t.co/Lp7WOWbiNY

kudos to @JimBethell for highlighting- smoking costs are so much more than financial- causing 54,300 cases of cancer per year -that’s round 150 PEOPLE each day!
I assume they will publish a list of attendees in the interest of transparency from our policy makers!
@CRUK_Policy
1/ Concerning report. Smoking is biggest cause of cancer & premature death.🚬is an addiction not a choice & Govt has a duty to help.
They must publish a full Tobacco Control Plan with action to reach #SmokefreeUK, which would reduce impact on NHS & economy.https://t.co/bzUvbYFzQm
It’s estimated that by 2030, 75% of all global cancer deaths will be in low and middle income countries (LMICs). Cancer is a global issue so focusing on cancer prevention across the world is essential. Read more on our global activity in LMICs: https://t.co/uxkDYs7Nn4
