I remember the first day I mentioned #BlackTwitter in a meeting (at Columbia records), and my boss said “That’s not really a thing, though.” A few months later I came across a whole study about the phenomena of the BT community (nobody could figure out how to crack it, because topics and trends didn’t follow any predictive formula) and sent it to him.

And then outlets started culling content, shows started capitalizing on the community live watch, lexicon was created, voices grew, and movements happened.

#BlackTwitter changed my life. That’s not an overstatement.
It changed my career trajectory. Tweeps became real life friends and colleagues.

Folks still don’t understand that the secret sauce of #BlackTwitter was the PEOPLE. Period.

This is the story of the people. Of the jokes. Of the movements. Of that community.
