Germany invaded Poland on September 1st 1939.

They murdered 5.2 million Polish citizens

- 39% of Poland’s doctors were murdered
- 33% of its teachers
- 30% of its university professors
- 28% of its priests
- 26% of its lawyers

The Germans:
- Stole 516,000 works of art worth $15 bn
- Destroyed 50 mln books from 40K libraries

- Poland lost 38% of its national wealth

- 65% of chemical industry
- 64% of the printing industry
- 55% of the health service infrastructure
- 55% of the clothing industry
- 53% of the food industry
- 50% of railway and road infrastructure
- 48% of the metallurgical industry
- 43% of cultural assets

In total, the Germans destroyed:

- 14 000 factories
- 35 000 farms
- 200 000 shops
- 85 000 craft workshops
- 1 million homes
- 17 universities
- 271 high schools
- 5700 elementary schools

The losses in dead and murdered per thousand inhabitants amounted to:

- 15 people in Czechoslovakia
- 40 in the USSR
- 70 in Greece
- 108 in Yugoslavia
- 222 citizens in Poland.

Poland’s population decreased from 35.4 million citizens in 1939 to 20.5 million in 1946 due to murder, forced deportations, border changes and refugees fleeing the country
