Social media lately seems flooded with people complaining about dating and the challenges of finding a spouse, but there are very few accounts you come across where a person takes an approach of honesty and accountability. This is a big problem because bad thinking is being reinforced.

I was in the dating world for about 20 years, now happily married (yay!). But one thing I say often to my single friends who ask for advice: theres little mystery to any of it.

The biggest problem overall is far more self-delusion than self-reflection. Apps and Instagram have warped perception. Nobody is good enough or someone could have anyone. Frustration grows.

Here are some observations that if taken to heart, could fix a lot of the mating mess out there:

- the problem is not "dating is cooked now." You may live in the wrong place, or be looking for the wrong things, or lie to yourself about what you bring to the table. But honesty can fix anyone's strategy.

- like all things in life that are challenging, it's easier to complain about others than do the work on yourself.

- dating should be fun. Your task is to enjoy yourself while helping another person do the same. Whether it all works out or not, it should be pleasant and considerate. So many people forget this.

- guys who think a woman's appearance can cancel out all else are speeding toward a brick wall. There's no such thing as "so hot it doesn't matter she's a selfish person" by about month 3 (ok maybe 6)

- women who care whether their female friends are impressed with a guy are doomed. Even worse if they worry about what he does for their online clout. (Sidenote: This often accompanies a height fixation)

- I've never met a woman with a good attitude and a good body who lacked good options. You don't have to be a rocket scientist/super model. If you're kind and fit, your problem will be sorting through guys, not finding any that like you.

- guys: playing the field is fine, but intimacy one at a time. That means different things to different people, but overall gist is the same. Nobody should be finding someone else's underwear next to the bed.

- true character flaws only get magnified in time. If someone is rude to staff, dishonest with you or impatient with animals, it's just the beginning. Bail out early.

- expectations of perfection are ruining your chances at finding imperfect greatness in another.

So there's a first draft. Daters of the internet, I'm here to help.
