My friend Terry Easterwood found this old postcard of the historic "Black Sunday" dust storm blowing into Pampa, Texas on April 14-15, 1935, scanned it, and sent it to me. This is the most infamous dust storm in American history. It was the time of the Dust Bowl and folks in Pampa were used to dust flying around but this was decidedly different. Per the National Weather Service:

That afternoon began almost pleasantly. The sky was clear, temperatures were unusually warm, and many families were outdoors because it was Palm Sunday. Then, shortly after 5 p.m. in the Texas Panhandle, people looked north and saw what appeared to be a mountain range growing on the horizon. It was not a cloud in the ordinary sense. It was a rolling wall of topsoil, hundreds of feet high, moving at an estimated 50 to 60 miles per hour.

Witnesses described the darkness as deeper than any moonless night. Visibility dropped from miles to only a few feet, and in many places people could not see their own hands in front of their faces. Livestock became disoriented. Automobiles stopped where they were because drivers could no longer see the road. Dust poured through every crack around windows and doors, coating furniture, dishes, clothing, and even food.

Awful, awful, awful. Can you imagine? You're driving your pickup truck home to some rural spot and this thing blows in on you?
