In UP, GCs make up around 18% of the population.

In the 2022 Assembly election, 89% of Brahmins, 87% of Rajputs, 83% of Banias, and 78% of Bhumihars and Kayasthas voted for the BJP.

That means roughly 85% of GC voters backed the BJP, making them its strongest and most loyal support base.

The BJP won 41% of the vote share against 32% for the SP, a gap of just 9 percentage points.

If even half of the BJP’s General Category support is taken away, it would collapse.

So the claim that General Category voters are "irrelevant" to UP politics simply does not stand up to the numbers.
