I have just published an explanation of why the Economist has attacked Daron Acemoglu -- AI policy is the real motivation. The piece is entitled "The Economist’s Embarrassing Proxy War Over AI Policy"; see https://t.co/2feHRsWkwv
Disagreement over AI policy seems to be behind @TheEconomist's decision to publish a hit piece attacking the Nobel laureate economist Daron Acemoglu. Eran Yashiv explains why the magazine did its readers a disservice. https://t.co/DhwzRoGJBd

.@eranyashiv discusses Israel’s socioeconomic divide—and warns that without a “dramatic change in course, the country will become poorer, less democratic, and more fragmented in the years to come.”

Foreign Affairs have published my piece entitled ”The Two Israels “ See https://t.co/JrE0Y3aSW0 or https://t.co/CVMVLUgtP7
It is about the highly problematic long term trajectory of Israel. Inter-alia it has things to say about the current Iran war circumstances
see
FT OpEd published today at https://t.co/FKD1UJUzgt
It is entitled "Netanyahu is undermining Israel’s economy" and explains why after more than 2.5 years of democratic backsliding and a drive to autocracy plus kleptocracy, there is a structural decline in the Israeli economy.
Inter alia, it cites, with a link, an open letter to Netanyahu by 25 top US and European economists including Nobel laureates.
The last two paragraphs of the OpEd indicate that external pressure may help.
Important note: while not covered in this OpEd, the terrible events of the Gaza war coming now from the Israeli side are tightly linked to these developments.

I published today an OpEd in Haaretz originally entitled

The Biden administration has various levers to achieve this goal. For example, it has several channels of communication with the ultra-Orthodox parties; their 18 seats are crucial in the current Knesset and in future ones.
· The US Administration has allies in Western Europe with additional levers of pressure. For a much lesser reason, the European Union democratically replaced Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi in 2011.
The prospect of a state that is religious and non-democratic alarms many Israelis. Hence, there has been a very lively discussion of the possibility of a break-up of the country into a secular, democratic Israel and a clerical, non-democratic Judea, governed and adjudicated by religious institutions. It is not clear how feasible this idea is, but the polarization it expresses reflects the operation of the afore-cited forces over time.
Hi
The news and commentary flow from Israel and the Middle East is overwhelming. In a chapter of a CEPR e-book that has just come out https://t.co/OSZgdy8n0e, I am trying to give a broader perspective. There is a link between the long run polarization trend in Israel, the Israeli democracy crisis of 2023, and repercussions for Israel’s behavior in the current war.
This crisis is not a temporary flare-up. It comes on top of a more subtle, slow and long run process of religious forces gaining political power in conjunction with the rise of a populist politician. Both oppose democracy and seek to dismantle its key institutions.
