Shona folklore had a wonderfully simple test of character.

Hand someone a baby.

If the child cried uncontrollably, people became… cautious.

If the child melted into sleep, our grandparents smiled. Their verdict was almost always the same: this was someone with a gentle spirit. Someone safe. Worth trusting. Worth doing business with. Perhaps even worth marrying.

I’ll leave it to science to explain.

My own theory is simpler. You only notice the smallest mark on a clean sheet of paper. Children’s hearts are about as pure as they come. They don’t care about titles, status or reputation. They simply know when they feel safe.

Maybe that’s what our grandparents were really trying to teach us. Trust begins long before credentials. It begins with character.

It was an honour to meet Geoffrey Eyanae Kaituko, Chargé d’Affaires of Kenya to Canada and author of Getting Things Done: The Key to Exemplary Leadership, and to present my memoir, Unfolding: A Resilient Journey to Leadership.” That title is precise and the tone is warm.

I deeply appreciated his warm welcome, our thoughtful conversation on leadership, and the genuine interest he showed in Unfolding. I was especially encouraged by his support and his commitment to help share the book with the Kenyan diaspora in Canada and beyond.

Although Unfolding is shaped by lived experience, its message is global. It speaks across cultures and borders through themes of resilience, transformational leadership, hope, and the courage to keep moving forward. I believe these stories can make a unique contribution to global conversations on leadership and meaningful impact. They also highlight the vital role girls and women play in shaping resilient communities and shaping transformational leadership worldwide.
