We are almost out of time to thank the Canadian women who served in the Second World War. Today, one of them turns 104.
Elizabeth Samson, a Cree woman, enlisted in Calgary for the Royal Canadian Air Force. She worked as a hospital assistant at No. 1 Bombing and Gunnery School.
At 102, George Beardshaw has received an honorary degree from @Laurier.
He is the last known surviving British Home Child in Canada and the last surviving Queen’s Own Rifles veteran of WW2.
It’s never too late to thank a veteran and make him feel recognized for his service.

Katherine McIntyre turns 103 today.
At 20, she joined the RCAF Women’s Division. She became one of Canada’s first female flying control operators, helping guide aircraft across the Atlantic from wartime Gander.
Happy birthday, Katherine.
Robert Watkins died last month at 101.
In 1944, his ship helped sink a German U-boat. Then they pulled the surviving crew from the water.
“We knew they could speak English because one guy was drifting away... and he knew the word ‘help.’”

Alvie Burden (1922–2026) survived chemical warfare tests in Suffield, Alberta. Later, he fought in Italy and the Netherlands with the Saskatoon Light Infantry.
He was the oldest Black Canadian veteran.
Donald Smoke turns 100 today, believed to be the last living First Nations veteran in Canada who served in the Second World War.
He served overseas and later spoke out about the unequal treatment Indigenous veterans faced.

Lloyd Gates turns 101 years old in Charlottetown, PEI.
Veterans Affairs Canada has 17 clients with World War II service living in the province of Prince Edward Island.
Lloyd, who served in the ground crew of RCAF 439 Squadron, is the last of his kind.

The last Chinese Canadian veteran of the Second World War has died.
Gordon Quan was ready to risk his life as a saboteur, but he could not vote, attend some schools, work in certain professions, or live anywhere he wanted in Canada.
His voice is now gone but we will remember.
There is a new Knight of France in Canada! George Soanes of Windsor, 101 years old, has just been named a Knight of the Légion d’honneur.
I put his name forward to @ConsulatFRAVan and thanks to their fast action, George received his medal only five months later.
