Daniel Olomae Ole Sapit, then 42, accidentally travelled to Pyongyang, North Korea, instead of Pyeongchang, South Korea, in October 2014 due to a booking error by his Nairobi-based travel agent.

Sapit, a Kenyan delegate and Maasai community representative, was heading to a UN biodiversity conference in South Korea. He only realised the mistake as his Air China flight descended into Pyongyang, where he noticed a heavily guarded landscape instead of the developed South Korean city he expected.

Upon landing without a North Korean visa, he was detained and interrogated for more than five hours. After explaining that it was an honest mix-up, authorities fined him $500, forced him to purchase a new ticket and deported him to Beijing.

From Beijing, Sapit rebooked his flight to South Korea and eventually made it to the conference.
