To provide a culturally safe healthcare, as a nurse I will: understand that it is defined by patient experience, understand their culture, be mindful of the culture differences,& appreciate the impact of colonisation to the health & wellbeing of First Nations people. #nursing1008
As a #nursing1008 student, I will endeavour to become a nurse who provides not just a medically safe healthcare but one that is culturally safe to the First Nations people of Australia. I will treat them with respect and dignity.
@SLednak Aboriginal existence is based on the notion of connectivity, which is manifested through caring and taking responsibility-tjukurrpa (knowledge of creation or ‘Dreaming’), ngura (place), walytja (kinship) and kurunpa (spirit or soul).
Cultural safety is the absence of violence, and denial of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders culture and identity, and can have a significant impact to improve the health and wellness of their community.

@ajaninesunga It was also created to address the rising levels of violence, economic deprivation, unemployment, inadequate housing, and poor health outcomes of Indigenous communities in the Norther Territory. #nursing1008
The stolen generation (around the 1st half of 20th century) are made up of Aboriginal children who were taken away without their parents’ consent at any time, for the purpose of assimilating them into the European culture. #nursing1008
The colonisation significantly reduced the Aboriginal population. Diseases were introduced, food supply was insufficient, social structure were altered and families were segregated, and direct deaths cause the population to decline. #nursing1008
The NT intervention failed to improve health & intensified depression and loss of hope on Aboriginal people. The confirmed child abuse numbers do not support the rationale for the creation of NT intervention. #nursing1008
Tips to connect with Aboriginal Community: attend local events that are organised by first nations people, visit their organisation, invite their elders to speak on your events. #Connecting#nursing1008
In Aboriginal communities, social networks are based on blood, marriage, association and spiritual significance. These culture were altered during colonisation as children were removed by govt, sent to churches & welfare and fostered out or adopted by non-indigenous families.
In order for an Indigenous person to attain an appreciation of Kanyini they need to have a balance of the four pillars which are belief (Tjuukurpa), spirituality(Kurunpa), family (Walytja) and land (Ngura).

As I visit the https://t.co/wNoX9kNYg2, & going thru the timeline, I’m enlightened on the sufferings the Indigenous people had to endure, & their desire to a better nation. This struck me the most: Australia was not a settlement or a discovery, it was an invasion. #nursing1008
According to the 2020 CTG report, the target to close the life expectancy gap by 2031 is not on track. In 2015-17, Indigenous males and females are 8.6 yrs and 7.8 yrs, respectively, less likely to live than their non- indigenous counterparts.

#NURSING1008 This week’s lecture provided me an overview to Australian Aboriginal culture. I am looking forward to learn and understand more of their culture.
