i feel as though taking the time to appreciate nature everyday can truly help in remembering to consciously make decisions that will benefit the natural world. there’s so much beauty out there, sometimes it’s easy to forget to sit still and observe it all. #ees028
@Sarah63601898 agreed! It’s crazy how many variants even for a small percentage; I like how they list what those variants are usually associated with, such as sense of direction or chocolate preference! I wonder how they can figure those things out from dna. #ees028
however, so many of us have Neanderthal DNA in us because before early humans killed them off, they had intercourse with them ! #6thextinction#ees028 23andMe provides information on Neanderthal DNA, the photos linked are my results! Overall I have ~2% Neanderthal DNA! Super cool
“life is extremely resilient, but not infinitely so” -Elizabeth Kolbert. 🦋be mindful of your actions and decisions, every action has an opposite reaction, much of which can either help or hurt the beautiful earth that houses us all. #6thextinction#ees028
we have killed off most of our decendents and are working on our “cousins”, the apes. It’s interesting how although we have a slow reproductive rate, our population is booming. potentially bc we dominate other species without considering repercussions #6thextinction#ees028
The last chapters of #6thextinction were my favorite. I always figured we were descendants of Neanderthals and were created by mutations, thus they eventually died off. Yet, I was shocked and disturbed that we were actually the cause of their demise ... we murdered them! #ees028
The hope is that the female eggs saved will eventually be fertilized with Sudan’s sperm that was also saved. However, this would still create a line of individuals with a lack of diversity and they would die off eventually. #ees028
Sudan, the world’s last white male rhino that resided in Kenya has passed away. Sudan was very used to human interaction. He was captured at 2 years old in 1975 to a zoo. He was relocated in 2009 to a conservancy. #RIPSudanRhino#ees028
Within this conservancy, Sudan began to take on natural habits again, like sharpening his horn on a tree. This brings up the question if he would have ever learned to be a “true rhino” again. #RIPSudanRhino#ees028
Castration of the giraffe would have taken up room where a different giraffe could have been housed. Selling the giraffe to a zoo without their genetic testing could result in that zoo selling it to a circus, which could be considered worse than killing it. #zoo#ees028
A giraffe was killed in order to prevent inbreeding at a zoo. The genes were not as diverse as the other giraffes, thus, there was not a point to put resources into the life of this giraffe #zoo#ees028
The white rhino from Africa is the only rhino species not currently listed as threaten despite being hunted in the 19th century. It is now under threat again in the 21st century. #6thextinction#ees028
Rhinos have a long history of being poached, more recently their horns have been used in South Eastern Asia in clubs for snorting like cocaine! #6thextinction#ees028
They rely on prairie dogs to live, but prairie dogs have been exposed to a deadly plague. Entire towns of prairie dogs have been wiped out. Conservationists are vaccinating prairie dogs in an effort to save the ferrets. #ees028#ferretdrones
In Montana, peanut butter pellets are being dropped onto prairie dog colonies. North Americas most endangered mammal is the black footed ferret! There’s only about 300 left in the wild. Their decline is likely linked to a loss of resources... #ferretdrones#ees028
Demand reduction and educational efforts to inform people that poaching can cause the extinction of species are efforts. They’re also informing medical professionals that #rhinohorn has no medicinal properties. All rhinos, even in zoos, are considered threatened. #ees028
