I’m graduating from @uoft today on the last day of graduation and they pulled me out of the procession line to search my bag and took my banner 🤪

The NDP is taking aim at the federal government after the IJF revealed it spent tens of millions on a secret contract with controversial tech company Palantir.

Carney has announced a new AI strategy to ramp up adoption of the tech-bro-touted technology in a way that he says “serves all Canadians.”
But BIG questions are lingering about how this aggressive ramp up will play out in a world where data centres guzzle water and destroy the environment:
It’s time to build affordable homes, a national network of public grocery stores, electric buses and an east-west clean energy grid. Not massive corporate AI data centres unleashed without any democratic debate.
There's also no real data sovereignty in an AI ecosystem dominated by U.S. tech giants. Telus may be Canadian-owned, but it has already transferred 14 petabytes of Canadian data onto Google Cloud as part of its AI strategy.
This is a technology that will bring sweeping changes at a scale and speed never seen before. Canadians deserve real oversight and a robust regulatory framework before we rush ahead.
That’s why we’re calling for an immediate pause on the construction of any new AI data centres until strong federal guardrails are in place.
We can’t sit back and let Big Tech billionaires decide our future for us.

Universities don't need to "teach students to use AI well." The whole point of AI is that it doesn't require any skill. Universities *should* teach students how to write and research on their own, and foster an ethic of shaming people who outsource their basic ability to think.
I’ve become convinced that the left needs to make the betterment of civil society, culture, art, sports, etc a real priority, and not just on the context of taking on capital. To build social trust and a happier America we need to invest in things that give us joy and community.
The Toronto Police budget is now well-over $1 Billion while every public service starves. Doug Ford is sending cops to bash kids heads-in with skateboards while they protest the gutting of public education. This kid could have died - remove funding for the toronto police
This is awful. America should have the best-paid teachers in the world. We should be investing in education — our future — instead of spending trillions of dollars on endless wars all over the planet.
