Very not a fan of how short the climatological reference period is in this forecast. Less than 30 years is just shoddy science. Even worse science is ending the reference period in 2016, which artificially inflates anomalies by erasing climate behavior from the last 10 years.

El Nino update. Godzilla is coming.

Most of the world will see top quartile temperatures over Jul/Aug/Sep, which is peak vegetative growth season globally for grains, half the world oilseeds and also for sugar and rice in Asia. That means more evapotranspiration and stress on crops.

India and South-East Asia will also likely see their weakeast monsoon rains in decades.

This is happening while there's a shortage of fertilizers.

I am the biggest proponent of “climate change is very bad” but I do implore people not to use fictional movies that inject unrealistic drama into their stories to keep an audience’s attention as a guide for understanding the progression and impacts of climate change.

Yes but The Day After Tomorrow also refers to mystical and physically impossible snow hurricanes that span an entire hemisphere as “supercells” so I wouldn’t put much stock in its supposed prophetic accuracy.

And the kicker is that I can’t just make a concerted effort to emulate the majesty of the preceding chapter. If I do, everything in the next chapter just reads weird and bad and too tryhard lol

I feel that way about my own writing quite frequently. My writing style is so inconsistent, even on a chapter-by-chapter basis, that I’ll sometimes be in the middle of writing a chapter and get really mad that the quality is noticeably worse than the chapter preceding it 😂

@marstrekoziy @fujoshijpeg Which like- that in mind, I think it would be pretty amusing for grace to get his shirt back and it just has a bunch of charred holes in it and melted fibers, and it smells HEINOUSLY like pee (because ammonia lol)

@marstrekoziy @fujoshijpeg Actually the shirt wouldn’t catch fire in a pure ammonia atmosphere. The fibers would definitely smolder and degrade in the heat, but 410°F isn’t enough to ignite a flame, especially without a freely available oxidizing gas (i.e. oxygen) to continuously sustain it.

The reason watney survived is bc he’s a botanist (and an actual trained astronaut), and the reason grace survived is bc he’s a molecular biologist (who met an alien as smart as him). In different situations w/o the resources to maximize the utility of their skillset, they die

Putting my tinfoil hat on, I do think this is why the US is repealing protections on clean water and making it so water treatment plants no longer have to go above and beyond to filter out cancer-causing “forever chemicals” in our drinking water 🤷‍♀️

All the unfiltered constituents in waste water can adhere to and cause rapid degradation of delicate materials and build up in the pipes/flow pathways that circulate it. Data center = dead.

Data centers also produce their own unique waste water which is very difficult to chemically treat (note: NOT impossible, just expensive—which is why, instead of using true closed-loop cooling circuits, AI corps just poison clean water and leave the rest of us to reap the fallout
