A devastating fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon at a four-storey garment factory and an adjacent chemical warehouse in Shialbari, Mirpur, in the capital. The Fire Service has reported the recovery of nine bodies from the site, warning that the death toll may rise further. On top of that, the volume of #arrests is several times higher compared to the normal rate of #bails for #inmates. #Political #prisoners are being detained without granting bail. 🔴 Interim government’s debt dependency rises: record burden of $112 billion Bangladesh’s foreign debt has now reached the highest level in its history. By the end of June this year, the figure stood at 112.16 billion US dollars equivalent to nearly 13.68 trillion Bangladeshi taka (calculated at Tk 122 per dollar). In just six months, the debt has risen by 9 billion dollars! 📌 According to Bangladesh Bank data, in March the debt was 104.8 billion dollars. This means in only three months, it increased by another 7.36 billion dollars. 📌 82% of the debt is in the public sector, while only 18% belongs to the private sector. Public sector debt alone grew by nearly 9% in just three months. 📌 Per capita foreign debt now stands at 638 dollars (around Tk 77,433). Ten years ago, it was only 257 dollars.
