*The following is a rewrite of the scene in the Forbidden forest from Harry Potter and the Philosopher(Sorcerer)'s Stone, located in Chapter 15: The Forbidden Forest, from Draceana(Malfoid)'s perspective.*
Stupid.
It was all so stupid. The trees with their jagged branches that reached down at them like claws,, the noises that Draceana had never heard before faintly echoing from the forest’s depths, the constant glares with no source boring into her back, Neville’s whimpering, and Fang’s labored and trembling panting.
“Stupid…” She kept her voice low, not wanting to disturb anything that could possibly be nearby.
Only small rays of moonlight poked through the black canopy, and she had to rely on the shoddy lantern that she’d been given for light. Its dulled glow only reached a few feet ahead of her, and even if Neville had one of his own, his was somehow worse and barely added to the light around them. Near pitch black was all that was in front of them, forcing her to look towards the ground so she didn’t get lost in her own thoughts.
“Stu-pid…”
All stupid Harry Potter had to do was take her hand on the train and follow her. If he had done that, then she wouldn’t have had to remind him of his place. She would be in this stupid forest looking for a stupid unicorn in the company of stupid people. He could have just been at her side, where he belonged, to carry her things and make her look better in the eyes of everyone. Not that she needed him to do that, of course.
But no, he had to reject her, Draceana Malfoy, the gall, the sheer ignorance! Such a slight couldn’t be ignored, and then he had to go and get sorted into Gryffindor… his audacity knew no bounds. Maybe if he let her be after that, she would have left him alone, but no, he had to always interfere, always be the one who said something to her. Should have just let her toy with Neville a while longer over his dumb memberball or whatever, yet he just grabbed his broom to chase after her, as always, and went after the blasted thing when she threw it. So foolish, so dashing…
Draceana stomped on the ground with every word. “Stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid!”
Neville yelped and hid behind a tree. Fang made a similar noise and rushed ahead a few paced before whipping around, his legs looking to bolt again. Draceana frowned at that. She shouldn’t have taken the dog, Hagrid was the better option. Better that mudblood be here instead of her, then she’d be next to Har-
She kicked a fallen twig and spit on the ground before shooting Neville a glare. “What are you waiting for?” She tilted her head towards the dirt road ahead. “Start walking.”
Her eyes continued to narrow at the boy until he reluctantly stepped out from behind the tree and started to trudge ahead of her. Seeing his shivering frame and head constantly on a darting swivel brought a wicked grin to her lips. She pulled her hood over her face and stalked closer to Neville, keeping her steps light. Given that the boy was probably too preoccupied with his own fears, she suspected this was unnecessary, but her smile widened when she envisioned how much more effective this was going to be.
She drew close to the boy, grabbed him, and shook him vigorously.
“AHHHHH!” Neville pulled out his wand and forced it above his head. A shower of red sparks followed, fireworks for the cackling Draceana who was doubled over from laughter.
She wiped her eyes and pointed at Neville. “How could you be scared by that?! What a coward you are, Longbottom!”
“N-no!” Neville’s face was bright red. “I-I…” He looked at the ground in shame.
She spent a good while laughing at him before planting her hands on her hips and drew her head back. “Honestly, with you and that useless mutt, it’ll be up to me to-”
“Malfoy! You snakebolooded-”
“AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”
Draceana staggered back at Hagrid’s sudden crashing through the trees, scream tearing from her lips. The massive man’s hand clamped over her mouth, but for all of its size, it might as well have been covering her face.
He frowned and looked around. “You’ll draw the whole forest to us, you fool! Now, before I let go, are you going to be quiet?”
She nodded slowly.
Hagrid’s hand left her mouth and she spit on the ground, prepared to say something. Those words fell silent when she felt the full weight of the gamekeeper’s glare upon her.
He sighed and shook his head “Follow me, I can’t trust ya with Neville.”
The gamemaster stomped back through the trees, his stride so wide that Draceana was practically jogging to keep up. That made her unable to say any of the words that she was grumbling in her head, but at the very least it only took them a few minutes before they met back up the others. Harry scowled at her the moment they met eyes, and she returned the sentiment by sticking her tongue out.
Hagrid let out a long, deep sigh upon stepping onto the dirt road, and turned back to Draceana and Neville. “We’ll be lucky ter catch anythin’ now, with the racket you two were makin’.” He scanned over everyone present. “Right, we’re changing groups - Neville, you stay with me an’ Hermione, Harry, you go with Fang an’ this idiot.” He thrust a thumb at Draceana.
She huffed and opened her mouth to say something, but paused when she saw Harry’s face fall to despair. A mischievous spark found her then, one that preoccupied her attention to the point that she couldn’t catch what Hagrid was whispering to the boy.
Draceana smirked as they split up into the new groups and puffed her chest out. “I guess Harry Potter will have to do as an escort for one such as I.”
Harry grumbled and stuck to Fang’s side. He said nothing to her and trudged along the forest.
“What’s wrong, Potter? Too honored to say anything?”
The boy fluttered his lips and made for a motion to turn around, but stopped himself and shook his head.
That bothered her more than it should have. “If you don’t do a good job, I’ll tell my father about this!”
Harry groaned and rubbed his face, but still kept silent.
She frowned, her tone growing harsher. “Cat got your tongue, Potter? Or is this how you are when there aren’t people to impress?”
Still the boy said nothing. He ran his hand along Fang’s side and petted the large dog on his head, which made him press against his side.
A feeling dug into her chest, a slow, building sensation that she couldn’t place, but made her uncomfortable. It grew in the continued silence, the words she may have said to fill it unable to leave her lips. She hated it, whatever this was. With all her might, she despised the feeling, and threw her attention elsewhere to forget it.
That proved to be a mistake.
Her lack of distraction made her keenly aware of how thick the trees around them were now, how deep the darkness ahead of their lamps truly was, and how loud the sounds of shifting branches and rustling foliage really were. She could see the unicorn’s blood in greater quantities now, the silvered ichor gleaming from the lamplight that passed over them. Splashes of it were scattered all over the roots that bulged up from the ground. The beast must have been thrashing around in pain, and given the thickness of it… it was close by.
“What are you doing, Malfoy?”
The sudden intrusion of Harry’s voice nearly made Draceana jump. “W-what?”
The boy lifted his arm, showing how she was clutching onto his sleeve. “You were planning to try and scare me, weren’t you?”
Her face flushed. “N-no! I just tripped and needed something to hold onto.” She let go and turned away from him. “That’s all you’re good for, Potter, just a post to-” She bumped into his outstretched arm, and was about to say something about that, but stopped when she saw him peering ahead.
“Look…” His voice was low as he crept forward.
Curiosity turned Draceana’s head towards where he was staring, which revealed the clearing that was ahead of them. Through the tangled branches of an ancient oak, she saw the unicorn.
It was dead.
Its long, slender legs stuck out at angles that brought bile to her throat, yet its mane was so evenly spread across the dark leaves in a sheet of pearlescent white that would take her breath away in any other instance. It was beautiful, disgusting, and sad all at once. These clashing ideas rooted Dreaceana in place, but Harry took a step towards the fallen unicorn. It was the slithering sound from the trees that froze him.
A bush at the edge of the clearing quivered, a soft shake that would normally betray the presence of a small creature. Instead, what emerged from the shadows beyond it was a hooded figure that crawled across the ground on all fours. A stalking beast was the first thing that came to her mind, but such a thing wouldn’t have given her this much fear. The angles of their limbs were too sharp, more like an insect than man, and the way they moved was both creeping and swift in such a way that ice spread up her spine just watching it close in on the unicorn. They pressed against the fallen beast, head twisting in jerking movements that looked over what was most likely its prey. The figure’s attention fixated on the open wound on the unicorn’s side, and with a sudden lunge, they clamped down upon it and sucked its blood.
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!”
The scream tore from Draceana’s lips just a breath before she turned to sprint away. Panic robbed her of all reason and sent only one thought to the forefront of her mind. She had to get away. The direction didn’t matter, she just had to be gone. The branches snagging at her robes and roots grabbing at her shoes only spurred this one thought along faster. At some point she lost her lantern, but she didn’t dare stop for it even when darkness swallowed her.
Her breathing turned into panting, and out of reflex to the fear that burned so deeply within her, her eyes started to water. Sobs escaped her lips as strength left her legs, but still she pressed on. It was only when a root finally grabbed her shoe and tripped her onto the forest floor did she stop, but her cries increased tenfold from there.
She curled into a shivering ball and wept. At first, it was just out of reflex, fear that crashed through the girl unburdened and caused her heart to thunder against her chest. The rush in her ears nearly drowned out all other sound, but she could still hear her own sobbing, and the same of that brought more fuel to her cries.
This was so stupid.
Stupid forest for being so terrifying.
Stupid Fang for being so cowardly.
Stupid Hagrid for thinking this was a good idea.
Stupid Neville for being so sensitive.
Stupid Harry for not letting her do what she wanted.
Stupid.
Her cries continued unabated for what could have been ages or seconds, but she was too wrapped up in the feeling to be able to tell. All she knew was that it felt like it would never end, and that spurred her weeping on further.
“Is that? Firenze, stop!”
“That is unwise, Potter boy.”
“Please!”
Two voices, one Harry’s and another much deeper than the boy’s. The sound of them stifled her cries only slightly, and when she heard a gallop start to approach her, she scrambled away from them out of fear. Her back found a nearby tree, but even with that support, any strength that could have been in her legs was long gone. A man with a horse’s body emerged from the brush, which would have made her scream, but it was the sight of Harry on his back that just kept her trembling instead.
There was a brief moment where she could see a smirk start to form on the boy’s face, a look of catharsis upon seeing her state, but that twitch in his lips froze the longer he looked at her. He hopped down from the centaur and walked over to her, saying nothing while he scanned her up and down. Through her own sniffling, Draceana still couldn’t find her words.
Harry held his hand out to her. “Come on, let’s go.”
She looked up at him in surprise.
He shook his hand. “We don’t have all day.”
The centaur grunted. “You may ride upon my back, Harry Potter, but I will not allow her to.”
Harry turned around. “Why?”
“You are important, she is not.”
“We can’t just leave her here, Firenze!”
The centaur set his jaw, saying nothing for a while, then turned around and stooped down on his hind legs.
Harry smiled. “Thank you.” He turned around and pushed his hand towards her again. “Come on, Malfoy, or am I going to have to carry you?”
The mocking edge to his voice steadied her. With trembling fingers, she took his hand. “N-no! This is all your fault anyway!”
Harry sighed, but said nothing else.
No further words were said as she climbed onto Firenze’s back with Harry. The centaur pushed into a gallop almost immediately, and she wrapped her arms around Harry in a panic, but he didn’t seem to mind. He was talking with Firenze about something, but her mind was still in too much of a blur to process them. She clutched onto him tighter, now confused. The forest was so cold, and with the air brushing by them like this, she should have felt like she was frozen.
So why was her face so warm?
