I live in an area where emus roam freely (in Aus., of course); so see them often.
It (the bird shown must have some sort of avian form of alopecia [hair loss due to an autoimmune condition; often stress-linked]).

I used to be a high school teacher and knew 2 sisters with scoliosis.
One had the procedure and the other (younger could make do with the brace). Very brave girls.
