DAVID BOWIE AS MEPHISTOPHELES FOR MTV
“New York’s In Love…”
Twenty-Five years ago this evening (9th September 1999), David Bowie and Iman attended the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City for the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards.
David was present to introduce Lauryn Hill, a “particular favourite” of his at the time.
Aside from the images we’ve used from the night, Mark Seliger photographed David as Mephistopheles from Gounod's opera Faust for promotional literature in the build up to the awards ceremony.
Several performers dressed as famous opera characters to emphasize the venue the awards were taking place at.

For years, the far left in America has talked up Jeremy Corbyn and Alexis Tspiras as "the blueprint to follow."
But Corbyn's failure and Tsipras' defeat show that anyone who follows their lead will end up in the abyss.
