A PARENT’S JOURNEY THROUGH YOUTH SPORTS:
Age 5: “He’s got a cannon.”
Age 6: “He’s the fastest kid out there. Coach said so.”
Age 7: “Rec ball isn’t challenging him anymore.”
Age 8: “We tried out for select. Obviously made it.”
Age 9: “$2,800 for the season. Plus uniforms. Plus tournaments. Plus hotels.”
Age 10: “Cooperstown is basically a family vacation, right?”
Age 11: “He needs a hitting guy. And a pitching guy. And probably a mental performance coach.”
Age 12: “I’m not a crazy sports parent. The OTHER parents are crazy.”
Age 13: “We changed schools. For academics. (And also baseball.)”
Age 14: “Showcases are a requirement at this age.”
Age 15: “Ya his ranking just ticked up. We’re cooking.”
Age 16: “He just needs to get seen by the right school.”
Age 17: “The D1 schools want him to walk on. He’ll earn a spot by sophomore year.”
Age 18: “Okay, D2 is actually really competitive.”
Age 19: “He’s redshirting. Strategic.”
Age 20: “He’s focusing on school now.”
Age 21: “You know what? He’s so much happier.”
Roughly 7% of high schoolers play in college.
About 1.5% of those get drafted.
Less than half of draftees ever play one day in the big leagues.
The odds of our kids going pro are somewhere between “struck by lightning” and “find a $100 in old shorts.”
I love youth sports (all my kids play a bunch of them) just keep a good perspective my friends. ✌️
You may not know about this story, but former NFL QB Teddy Bridgewater went back to his high school to be head coach and was suspended a year for using his own money to pay for his underprivileged players' Uber rides, meals, and athletic recovery services. DeSantis signed a law allowing coaches to use $15k of their own money for underprivileged kids.
Why didn’t he do fist pumps, wave to the outfield, and taunt the opponents dugout? Why was the whole team not at home plate to do some choreographed dance ritual?

Check out this great review from my newest EP Only A Prayer Away from Michael Cavacini.
“The EP features six infectious songs that serve as a masterclass in songwriting. It is replete with the expert musicianship that Jon is known for—specifically that signature, emotive piano playing that can make a stadium feel like an intimate living room.”

So many of you responded to the story and clip from the powerful new song by Jonathan Cain of Journey, “Only a Prayer Away.”
Now here is the full song—paired with dynamic visuals of people coming to Christ at Harvest Crusades, along with some of their personal testimonies.
I believe this will truly inspire you. Take a few moments and watch.
45 years ago today in a hard-fought game, Pitt defeated Duquesne 64-60 for the Eastern 8 title at the Civic Arena before a packed house and a regional northeast tv audience, @Steigerworld on the call with Howard David. It was the pinnacle of that great local college basketball rivalry. Pitt, led by the great Sam Clancy, raced out to a big lead early behind some hot shooting by tournament MVP Lennie McMillian (who ended up playing professional basketball until he was about 50, a veritable Jaromir Jagr of the hardwood, but that’s another story!). Duquesne, behind more great names like Bruce Atkins, Tom Cvitkovic, and Andy Sissini, crawled back and were within 3 late, but that was still a two-possession game in those days before the 3-point line. Refereeing the game was one Gene Steratore Sr. A link to the full broadcast on WTAE is below and in our opinion this is still a great watch and a wonderful slice of Pittsburgh basketball history (with special guest appearances by Tiger Paul and the Eastern 8 “Hoopster Rooster”, not quite sure if Mossie Murphy also appeared). The Pitt warmup jacket pictured was worn in this very game. WVU made the semis of this tournament, and the semifinal doubleheader with Pitt blowing out top seed Rhode Island and Duquesne winning another hard-fought game against West Virginia was as great a day of basketball that anyone could have ever wanted. And we’ll take that old Civic Arena patchwork hardwood floor any day of the week over that Big 12 techno-floor! https://t.co/eWhAvLuK1u
