Aluminum plunged -8.4% on Thursday, the largest single-day drop since 2018, while copper fell -5.2%, wiping out all gains for the year.

Copper has now fallen -11% in March alone after hitting an all-time high in late January.

Tin dropped -7% and nickel fell over -3%, as every base metal on the London Metal Exchange sold off.

This comes as soaring energy prices from the Iran War are threatening manufacturing activity worldwide, with traders pricing in a broader global economic slowdown.

The longer crude oil prices stay elevated, the more it feeds into inflation and the higher the risk of rate hikes, further pressuring industrial demand.

However, falling metal prices may at some point trigger a wave of buying in China, where manufacturers had been holding back due to high prices earlier this year.

‼️The strikes on the world's largest LNG export facility are threatening a long-term global gas shortage:

Iran's missile strikes on Qatar's Ras Laffan facility damaged LNG processing equipment, a gas-to-liquids plant, and storage infrastructure.

The damage has knocked out ~17% of Qatar's LNG export capacity, with repairs expected to take 3 to 5 years, according to QatarEnergy CEO Saad al-Kaabi.

The remaining capacity cannot restart until the war ends, and even then QatarEnergy says it would take "weeks to months" for deliveries to normalize.

Meanwhile, Ras Laffan supplied ~19% of global LNG exports in 2025, with China (19.7M tons) and India (11.7M tons) being the largest buyers.

A 4 to 5-month delay in restarting the undamaged facilities could remove up to 30 million tons of LNG from the global market.

Countries like India, Bangladesh, Taiwan, and Pakistan, where Qatar supplies over 20% of total gas consumption, are the most exposed.

This is no longer a short-term disruption; it is a multi-year energy supply shock.

🚨The Iran War is putting the semiconductor industry on high alert:

The shutdown of Qatar's Ras Laffan facility, the world's largest LNG export plant, has knocked out ~33% of global helium supply, as helium is a byproduct of natural gas processing.

With the facility offline, the global market is losing ~5.2 million cubic meters per month, while there is almost no spare capacity as helium must reach end users within ~45 days before it evaporates.

As a result, Helium spot prices have risen over +100% since the Iran War began.

Notably, in 2025, Qatar produced 63 million cubic meters of helium, making it the 2nd-largest producer in the world after the US.

If the disruption lasts 60 to 90 days, prices could surge another +50%, potentially exceeding $2,000 per thousand cubic feet, according to AKAP Energy.

Helium is essential for semiconductor manufacturing, MRI machines, fiber optics, and space exploration, with no viable substitutes, meaning higher helium prices will directly raise the cost of making every chip in the world.

Chipmakers hold ~6 months of inventory, but Samsung and SK Hynix are already scrambling to find alternative sources, with 64% of South Korean helium imports coming from Qatar alone.

The Iran War is sending shockwaves well beyond the energy market.
