Van Gogh’s flower of choice: Sunflowers. 🌻
While living in France, he came across sunflowers growing in Montmartre’s vegetable gardens. Their ‘rustic’ charm likely appealed to him.

In the 19th century, some painters became closely associated with a single bloom – and for Van Gogh, it was the sunflower. (1/2) This 1910 photo shows the Royal Palace in Dresden, Germany. For almost 400 years it was the seat of the kings of Saxony and home to the Green Vault, one of Europe's greatest treasure chambers. In 1945 it burned to an empty shell in the bombing of Dresden, and stood a ruin for more than forty years. Its rebuilding, begun in 1985, has only lately neared completion. 👇 Next: how it looks today.
