Every year, the planet sends us signals. Rising temperatures. Shrinking glaciers. More frequent extreme weather events. This is no longer a prediction it's our reality, and the time to act is now.

To mark the International World Forest Day, @AN__Foundation supported the reforestation of Namenya hills in an exercise led by the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) Port Victoria Station and two hundred youth from five Technical Colleges across Busia County (Bumbe National Polytechnic, Bunyala, Dr Wako, Chemasiri, and Butula TVCs), hosted by the Young Catholic Association (YCA) of St. Nicholas Port Victoria Catholic Parish. Over 1000 trees were planted.
Namenya Hill becomes the 3rd block I have adopted in Busia County for restoration and regeneration, joining the Port Victoria Forest Station/Njalagobe Hills and the Singwe ecosystem. Port Victoria Forest Station is a 601.6-hectare conservation area located in Bunyala Sub-County, Busia County, managed by the KFS and encompassing the four key hills of Mumbaka, Wanga, Namuluku, and Nanyungu. It is the only forest in Busia County and plays a crucial role in nourishing the Yala Swamp. In less than a year I have added over 2000 trees to the Port Victoria Forest ecosystem, and distributed hundreds of fruit trees to the local community.
Nationally, I have adopted three other natural ecosystems across Kenya: Arabuko Sokoke Forest in Kilifi County, Kwale County Mangrove Forest and Cheptais Forest Block of Mt. Elgon, for purposes of sustained regeneration and protection.
At below 1.0% Busia has among the lowest forest cover ratios in Kenya, way below the national average of just under 10% (itself still quite low). Everyone must do more to reverse this, by growing and nurturing our environs for our own good and for the good of our children and their children.
I thank Mr. Job Wakoli, Manager of the Port Victoria Forest Station and his Officers for their continued support. I commend our young people from across Busia County for choosing to be part of the solution to the big environmental challenges facing our world, and my home Catholic Parish, St. Nicholas Port Victoria, for being the perfect host.
I was represented at today’s exercise by Pastor John Osimbo, Director, Kenya Film Classification Board.

As we embarked on official duty in Vienna, Austria, I led our delegation and Embassy staff in praying and honouring the indelible memory of Baba Raila Amolo Odinga, as we closed the Embassy's condolences book. Rest well eternal Jakom. You gave the very best of yourself to the Motherland. Special appreciation to colleague Ambassadors Valerie Rugene and Daniel Waisiko Wambura. @ValerieRugene@Kmunep
