Uganda registers first Sickle Cell disease cure
Based on the medical experts’ reports at the US-based hospital, Byamukama is now the first Uganda to be completely healed of sickle cell disease after the ground-breaking treatment.

The 🇺🇸 government, through @PEPFAR, is making a pre-market commitment to purchase and donate lenacapavir, a revolutionary HIV prevention injection from @GileadSciences, an American company. This innovative medicine, taken only twice a year, will be distributed in 10 high-burden HIV countries starting in 2026, including Uganda. Together with the @MinofHealthUG, we’re working to build durable health systems and reduce new HIV infections, especially in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Dr Tusiimire noted that while a significant number of Ugandans carry the sickle cell trait, many children with the disease go undiagnosed due to a lack of proactive screening.

More than 60% of governments in Africa spend more on servicing their obligations than on health care, according to a recent UN report. The total burden has more than doubled to $685 billion in the past decade. It’s little wonder, then, that most African countries aren’t going to meet poverty-reduction goals set by the UN.
