Summer's here and wildfires are looming large - now is the time to prep for woodsmoke events. I'm sharing some of my thoughts on creating a "clean room" in your home using air cleaning, air sealing, and simple strategies for managing indoor emissions:

Amity Deters of Portland State University presented conclusions of outstanding research on CR Boxes. Once again, CR Boxes work very well with effectiveness (reductions in wildfire smoke particles) of approximately 90% or higher in model spaces.
In this ACS ES&T Air article, @etgall of @Portland_State characterizes and evaluates the ability of #aircleaners to remove particle and gas-phase pollutants under realistic indoor #wildfiresmoke conditions.

@Stoffel78179983@ShivenTaneja True overall. Though the specific claim by the CDC post that motivated this work was that construction quality issues may result in leaks and gaps that impact effectiveness. Our aim was to try to isolate that effect in our study.
The CDC has stated "construction quality...could substantially affect the performance of DIY air filtration units". Our new study on CR Boxes sought to investigate this claim. Main result? 8 novices built 8 different CR Boxes w/ 8% variability in CADR.

This was a really fun study, with great work by @brettwstinson and enabled by a fantastic summer undergrad Amity Deters, who will be presenting this work @IndoorAir2024!
Finally, we modeled a scenario where a newly-built CR box is immediately deployed, e.g. to a bedroom during a wildfire smoke event. Across AER 0.1-1 /h, CR box significantly reduces PM2.5 while there was a short period of elevated BTEX due to off-gassing from tape.
@ParentMishmash Yes, unit D/S1 was a CR-Box air cleaner made with carbon impregnated filters. Not very effective. We have since tested some other filters that, on their own, have higher single pass removal efficiency such that we'd expect higher BTEX CADRs.
Glad to share our recently published study in ES&T Air evaluating 13 different air cleaners for PM and VOC removal under wildfire smoke conditions. We evaluated 13 different commercial and DIY air cleaners in a test chamber w/ pine needle wildfire smoke challenge
