.@AOC responds to this trend: "BOOOOO"
"This race to try to see who can be exempt from participating in society is not a conversation that I'm interested in," she tells me. "I'm a Great Society Democrat, and I believe in building that together. And I think that the discourse around 'Everyone, let's all be like billionaires and opt out of our taxes,' I don't find it an inspiring message."
the cool thing about this policy is that there is a very easy way for the rich to avoid it: they can simply live in NYC full time
instead of incentivizing the rich to leave New York it incentivizes them to *stay* in New York
smart tax. A valid concern about taxing the rich at a state or municipal level is that they'll move. But that's irrelevant if you tax people who already don't live in NYC. You even see people like Jason Calacanis trying to pull the "they'll flee NYC" line. It doesn't work here!
Households that own cars have double the median income of households that don’t—yet we give away public space equivalent to 12 Central Parks to free storage of cars (many of which aren’t even owned by New Yorkers).
Free parking is deeply regressive, not an affordability policy.
NEW: Mamdani's City Hall is discussing charging fees for currently free on-street parking — a policy change that would not only create a new revenue stream but also seize a once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve the streetscape. https://t.co/7jaEaQXhdf
"If Mamdani is elected, rich people will flee."
Multinational financial services company: "We're going to build a 2M square foot headquarters a few blocks from City Hall."
One of the impressive things about Mamdani is that he listens to experts and evidence, and learns and adapts. He wasn't YIMBY 12 months ago. He did have the goal of bringing down housing costs, but his approach wouldn't have worked. I credit @DKThomp with exposing him to the evidence that YIMBY was the way to do it. And so Mamdani changed his approach and went to a much more market-oriented plan to lower housing costs in NYC. This is exceedingly rare in politicians. We should applaud and encourage it.
In a city that moves a mile a minute, it shouldn’t take two years to get an affordable home through environmental review!
Watch @NYCMayor stand with @GovKathyHochul to support streamlining state SEQR rules so we can deliver homes to New Yorkers faster & drive housing costs down.
this video is a great illustration that the “all econ = austrian school market fundamentalism” strawman is extremely common on the left. the fact that jon stewart seems shocked that most economists support a carbon tax … yeah.
Some very exciting news for @UAW members today! Congrats to the workers of Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant for reaching a historic tentative contract for well-deserved wage increases and benefits. The people united will never be defeated.
Americans are being killed in the street by their government. Our Constitution is being shredded and our rights are dissolving. Resist.
Senate Dems should block ICE funding this week. Activate the National Guard.
We can and must stop this.
