I've heard of people spending 3 hours writing a "perfect" email.
You know what converts better than a perfect email?
THREE pretty good emails.
Because here's what most people don't get about email marketing:
Revenue is about RHYTHM, not perfection.
Think about your own inbox:
You don't remember the "perfect" emails you got last month.
But you definitely remember which BRANDS consistently show up.
Every "perfect" email you write...
Is an email you DIDN'T write.
And that means:
โข Less presence in the inbox
โข Less relationship building
โข Less opportunities to sell
Stop trying to write masterpieces.
Start building momentum instead.
Today, 28th September, marks 4 years since I started my online journey.
It wasn't the day I made my first dollar online.
Neither was it the day I landed my first client.
However, it was the day I bought my first copywriting course using the money an uncle gave me.
The year was 2020.
The world was shut down.
School wasn't in session, and there I was, at home, not sure what was next.
Then came this friend who told me about copywriting (A course called Bachelor of Copywriting)
She told me how it was the best thing that happened to her and how I should give it a shot.
After going through the program in October 2020,
I spent the next months practicing copy, handwriting copy, and volunteering to write free copy...
Not until February did I close my first-ever copywriting client.
The client offered me $5 for a landing page copy that took me two weeks to write, haha.
Well, anything is something, right?
From there, I went on to work with small local brands here and there.
School was back in session, and so I juggled both copywriting and school.
While also investing in more training every now and then.
In 2021, I decided to start an email list.
My goal?
I had so many stories to tell and just wanted an avenue to share them.
Plus, it would sharpen my copy skills, haha.
So I signed up on SendFox (who the heck uses SendFox?).
Well, the ESP wasnโt a concern thenโprovided I could send emails with it, for free haha.
So I kept writing emails... writing emails.
I didnโt have any offers then, so my emails were basically stories like this one:
How my day went
My love story
Or one marketing lesson I learned recently.
Not until 2022, when my now coach @mrnanabo
decided to join my email list.
After reading my emails for a while,
he replied to me and said: "See, you're pretty good at emails. Why not niche down and make this your specialty?"
I was already nursing that idea, but hearing it from someone I respected gave me more confidence.
So I went under his tutelage and learned direct response email marketing.
One month later, I closed a $1k/m deal with an agency as an email copywriter and was expected to write 5 emails daily, haha.
That was a big one for me.
Rest assured, I gave it my best shot.
From then, I went on to work with other brands from Upwork and some agencies.
Along the line, I thought:
If I could write emails for clients, then I could also send them out and be in charge of the whole strategy.
That was when my full-fledged email marketing career started.
And because I always like to learn from experts when diving into a new skill,
I joined Rob Allenโs (of blessed memory) Email Marketing Unfair Advantage program, which cost me $700.
For someone in a third-world country,
that was a lot to invest in a course.
But I knew that if I was going to make it in the email marketing world, I had to learn from the best.
I could go on and on about the wins,
the personal investments in myself,
the failures,
the "Oh, Iโm giving up tonight" moments.
But the summary is this:
The most difficult thing to do is to remain on the same path.
A lot of people learn a skill today and jump off the next day.
If you really want to see results as a skilled person, you must be consistent.
Scratch that!
You must be consistent for a long time.
So if you're the type of person who jumps from one thing to the next,
let this be a reminder that shiny object syndrome leads you nowhere, but focus does.
Happy 4 years to me.
This is just the beginning of what God has in store for me in email marketing.
