July 13, 1978. Ford fired the man who built the Mustang. Exactly five years later, he got his revenge.

Iacocca had given Ford 32 years. He was the father of the Mustang and the president of the company. Ford made close to $2 billion that year.

On July 13, 1978, Henry Ford II fired him anyway. Asked why, Ford reportedly said: sometimes you just don't like somebody.

Iacocca later called it a lonely summer. Big companies outside cars offered him the top job. He wanted to stay in cars, and the only real opening was Chrysler. It was close to bankruptcy.

He cut his own salary to $1 a year. He laid off tens of thousands of workers, and he says he never forgot their faces. He went to Washington and won federal loan guarantees, and Chrysler borrowed $1.2 billion. Then he went on TV himself: if you can find a better car, buy it.

On July 13, 1983, exactly five years after Ford fired him, he stood at the National Press Club in Washington. Chrysler would pay off the last $800 million. Seven years early.

He opened by saying he was fired five years ago that day and hated being reminded of it. Then came his line: we at Chrysler borrow money the old-fashioned way. We pay it back.
