@youngvulgarian Depends! Smaller countries can’t afford that bc we have to stretch resources to punch above our weight and civil servants tend to be better at keeping our pols on a short leash. Do recognize what you described from colleagues tho.
Been in London f 2 hours. 1 of those have been spent on a malfunctioning Elizabeth Line train. But I only paid 15 quid f the pleasure. We’ll see if I can have one journey without a delay/breakdown/failed train on this stay
@nationalrailenq - help, we’re stuck at Sutton train outside Loughborough Junction because apparently the train ahead of us has … run out of power. No update on how long we’re meant to be kept in this train
Very pleased to announce that @AnnOlivarius has received a book contract by a major press for her forthcoming study of Rhodes Scholar women based on The Rhodes Project. The book is tentatively titled, Leading Women: Female Rhodes Scholars. #RhodesScholars
Thank you for canceling my Heathrow- Madrid flight, @British_Airways but NOT sending an email, NOT allowing me to rebook online and now making me wait 8 hours in Heathrow. Don’t to code shares if you can’t do the simplest things.
Among Kansans who registered to vote on or after June 24th (when the Dobbs decision was announced), Democrats have an 8 pt advantage. Compare that to the GOP's overall advantage of 19 pts among all registered voters in Kansas. The landscape changed on June 24th.
The realisation that the last 50 year's progress was only a flimsy compromise that has been undone is staggering. And it's staggering that I ever allowed myself to believe otherwise. Shame on me.
A very special and particularly brilliant 10 year girl I know just did a school project on the suffragettes. Her poster “We Will Not Go Quietly!!!” is a work of art and such spirit and talent f trouble deserves to be nourished. She has a twin sister who’s equally wonderful.
It's been an emotional #InternationalWomensDay. So marking this eve with a book giveaway ⚡ I have 10 SIGNED copies of @sufiyaahmed's BRILLIANT #SophiaDuleepSingh. For a chance to win one, tell me why you'd like one by midnight tomorrow, using #SophiaSingh. UK entries only. 💕
@maybelle_morgan@Refinery29UK At 27 I moved from Denmark to the New York, giving up my nascent career in nuclear diplomacy to pursue one in the NGO sector - and get married and become a step-mom of a sweet, sweet 4-year old. 1 other kid, several jobs and 4 countries (and counting) later I have ZERO regrets.
Looking forward to speaking to @Emmabarnett on @BBCWomansHour about the NY judgment which rejected Prince Andrew's motion to dismiss Virginia Giuffre's complaint.
@RoseStokes When I look at the videos we have of me with my now 9-year old as a toddler I'm struck at how ABSURDLY, DELIRIOUSLY happy I look when I dance with him and snuggle him. It makes me feel I can't be doing too bad a job if the kid gets that kind of love. Your kid will get that too
@RottenInDenmark Also depends on what you mean by "fat". It *really* doesn't take much for women to feel like we are unforgivably large and must shrink ourselves at almost any cost.
@kate_manne Our bodies are meant to move with joy and, as an added bonus, skill and purpose (I say this an avid but incompetent boxer). For women in particular, the focus on strength, skills and pleasure is just 🤯& radical. It's the only way I find my way out of this particular maze.
@Oliviapetter1 NONE of us can abstain from the systems we're critiquing precisely because they are impossible to escape entirely. That doesn't absolve us from grappling with what that participation MEANS for their continuation.
@Oliviapetter1 Not sure the critique is that she shouldn't be able critique the system she's participating in. It's more that her critique is not very trenchant or useful. Personally I reckon that's because she doesn't analyse the ramifications of her own participation very sharply.
