The New Zealand Taxpayers' Union says NZ First’s $1 billion proposal to survey offshore oil and gas reserves leaves one glaring question: where is the money coming from?

Taxpayers' Union spokeswoman, Ella Dickson, said:

“Winston Peters has already committed taxpayers to $1.7 billion for ferries the Government does not need to own, floated buying back the BNZ, and now wants another $1 billion for an offshore energy survey. How does he plan to pay for it all?”

“NZ First must explain what it would cut or sell to fund these expensive promises. It cannot keep piling billion-dollar commitments onto taxpayers without saying where the money will come from.”

“Talk of following the Norwegian model ignores the fact Norway built its sovereign wealth fund from commercial returns. Before announcing another billion-dollar promise, NZ First needs to show taxpayers the money.”

US Oil Refiners Running at Max Capacity

Nationwide, refiners have been running at or above the 95% utilization rate that’s widely regarded as full capacity for almost two months, government figures showed. In at least one region, the Rocky Mountains, fuelmakers have surpassed the 100% mark twice in the past few weeks, a pace that even the refining industry’s main lobbying group warns is untenable.

Running near max capacity is “raising the likelihood that equipment failures tighten fuel supply and amplify price volatility,” Rapidan Energy analysts said.

Several major refiners already have postponed maintenance to keep capacity online. Motiva Enterprises LLC delayed a turnaround at the biggest crude unit at its Port Arthur refinery in Texas by a year to the fall of 2027.

Any major outage could have an outsized impact because domestic fuel stockpiles are unusually low. Inventories have been strained by robust demand for US diesel to replace production lost to the conflicts in Russia and the Persian Gulf, and a drop in gasoline imports to a 29-year seasonal low. Life Insurance: You pay in $60,000 over forty years and your heirs collect $500,000. On the surface this looks like a magic trick, or a company begging for bankruptcy. The price system is doing exactly what free market economists have always said it does: coordinating risk, time, and capital better than any bureaucrat ever could.

Start with pooling. The insurer does not sell you a policy; it sells policies to a hundred thousand people like you. Mises called this class probability: nobody knows whether you die at 43 or 91, but an actuary knows with tight precision how many men in a pool of 100,000 forty-year-olds die each year. Most policyholders outlive their term policies entirely and collect nothing. Their premiums fund the payouts to the few who die early. You are not buying a savings account. You are buying a claim against a pool, and the pool is enormous.

Now add time. Your premiums do not sit in a vault. The insurer invests them the moment they arrive, in bonds, mortgages, and commercial real estate, compounding for decades. A dollar you pay at age 30 works for fifty years before anyone touches it. At even 5 percent, that dollar becomes eleven dollars. The payout gap you find so mysterious is mostly interest, the market price of time, the reflection of human time preference that no central banker invented and none can abolish.

Notice what did not happen. No regulator commanded this arrangement into existence. Entrepreneurs, starting with the Equitable Life Assurance Society in 1762, competed to price mortality accurately, and the ones who guessed wrong went bust. That competitive discipline is why the numbers work. Compare this to Social Security, where politicians run the pool, invest in nothing, spend the premiums immediately, and promise payouts backed by future taxation. One system compounds capital; the other consumes it.

The payout dwarfs your premiums because voluntary exchange lets a hundred thousand strangers share a risk none could bear alone, and because saved capital, left alone to compound, multiplies. Nothing miraculous. Just mathematics, property rights, and time, the three things politicians understand least.

According to nutrient density information by multiple sources including the USDA, it ranks nearly dead last. Here’s the order for nutrient dense meat (generally)

- Beef (especially grass-fed; high in protein, zinc, iron, B vitamins, creatine)
- Lamb (often tops lists for nutrient density per serving; excellent fats, minerals, B vitamins)
- Bison (very lean, high protein, strong mineral profile; frequently #1 or #2 vs. others)
- Venison (lean, nutrient-packed game meat; high vitamins/minerals per calorie)
- Fish (varies: fatty fish like salmon excel in omega-3s; high in protein/selenium)
- Pork (good protein/minerals but often ranks below ruminants; varies by cut)

And all the way at the bottom is chicken:

- Chicken is excellent for lean protein but generally much lower in key micronutrients and fats compared to all the above

Marketing played a major role in shifting consumer habits, emphasizing health and nutrition angles while industrial production scaled up dramatically. This was classic marketing to expand market share

When you add up the famines, executions, camps, and deportations, Stalin’s policies killed over 20 million people.

He caused the Holodomor in Ukraine. Took the grain, sealed the borders, and let millions starve. The same collectivization drive killed over a million Kazakhs in the famine there. Whole regions wiped out while the state grabbed the food.

Then the Great Purge. Hundreds of thousands executed, many shot in the head for quotas or false accusations. His own military officers got taken out right before the war with Hitler.

Millions more went into the Gulag. 18 million passed through the camps. 1.5 million died from starvation, cold, disease, and overwork. Slave labor in the worst conditions.

He also deported entire ethnic groups. Chechens, Crimean Tatars, Volga Germans, and others got packed into trains and dumped in remote areas. Hundreds of thousands died from the conditions and neglect.

All this death came from deliberate policies of control, collectivization, and terror.

The Western Allies knew about the killings and still chose to cooperate with him to win the war. They supplied him, held summits with him, and looked the other way. And that remains one of the West’s gravest moral failures.
