The signing took place at the Soviet headquarters located in Karlshorst, a suburb of Berlin. On the other side of the table, representing the victorious Allied forces, were Soviet Marshal Georgy Zhukov, British Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Tedder, and U.S. General Carl Spaatz.

As Keitel sat down to sign the document, he must have been acutely aware of the dire situation Germany found itself in. The German Wehrmacht, once a formidable military force, had been pushed back on all fronts and was facing the combined might of the Allied armies. Keitel's signature on the surrender document would mark the end of six years of devastating warfare and the beginning of a new chapter in European history.
