Yikes. What a terrible response. The preferreds are a Bitcoin investment product—per Saylor himself.
$MSTR isn’t really a software company
$MTPLF isn’t really a hotel company
They’ve collectively decided to stop investing in their core business and buy Bitcoin as the “risk free” alternative. Their market caps are completely detached from their core business and entirely based on their Bitcoin holdings. They’re launching preferreds as a product designed to give stable returns while capitalizing on long term Bitcoin returns.
They absolutely compete for segments of investors, preferreds and commons alike. The companies that are the most stable and offer the best returns will attract more investors. Simple as. The playbook is to stop being a shitco and either attract investment through novel financial vehicles or find some other means of generating returns from your Bitcoin holdings while de-risking your balance sheet to counter the liquidation FUD.
He’s either being purposely obtuse or didn’t understand the question. Neither is great imo.
Not defensive at all. You missed the points.
Danny asked about unprofitable businesses buying Bitcoin and if there is 'room' for all these companies.
Saylor basically said it's a stupid question. Bitcoin is for all companies and all individuals. Which he HAS been saying for YEARS.
Danny managed the 'conversation' well - but Saylor was trying to make a point and Danny was struggling with the framing. Danny is more like a hardened Bitcoiner. Saylor is a base layer thinker.
I'm not sure it ended in agreement - Danny did a great job managing the conversation but Saylor was at a whole different level. This was making the conversation seem heated as Saylor kept trying to explain in several different ways (ie. the electrification example was excellent). Hard/real money is the SAME as hard/real energy (Bitcoin is just a store of human energy).
Saylor always goes to base layer - energy. This is even tough for most Bitcoiners. We ALL hear different things from Saylor depending on our base of knowledge and how much we have studied the history of money/civilization, and Bitcoin itself.
My takeaways from the interview?
1. He’s got a point: our energy is misplaced criticizing companies that are adopting Bitcoin.
2. Following from that, the call to action isn’t that we should move on to criticizing companies that haven’t adopted BTC. It’s that we need to redouble our efforts to educate individuals around adopting and using BTC, taking it into self custody.
3. We should embrace the fierce urgency of “now” in decentralizing ownership and use of Bitcoin. A healthy competition of “we the people” globally vs the institutions.
Game on!
