So, a lot of people ask me why I buy so many books. The truth is, I have a genetic disorder where my body doesn’t produce enough books of its own, so I have to supplement.

“Doctor” comes from the Latin for “to teach,” originally referred solely to teachers & scholars, and only in the early modern era came to encompass medical professionals. It’s because we have so little respect for scholarship & the humanities that this seems strange to us.

adding on to this, 1984 also talks about how simplifying language is actually a form of oppression because they want to take away any vessel for thought-sharing among the masses… literature has always warned us about where our society is unfortunately heading…
im aware that men dont read vs publishers dont make books for men is a bit of a chicken or the egg problem but i do think its significant to note that women have always been open to reading “boy books” but the inverse is not true
I'm teaching databases this semester at Berkeley. My students all seem unusually brilliant. Not many go to office hours, and not too many folks post on the course forum asking project questions.
Weirdly, the exam had the lowest recorded average in my 10 semesters teaching it.
