The NY Declaration on Animal Consciousness noted that we need more animal consciousness research, and this article rightly notes that this research should prioritize animal well-being. An important continuation of the conversation - thanks to the authors!

Good luck to the @humaneleagueuk today in its case against "Frankenchickens" at the Court of Appeal. As you can see from the Court's website, the legal issues are incredibly intricate and complex.
“In other disciplines we accept scientist activists. We accept climate scientists who are activists. We accept physicians who advocate for their patients... But w/i the animal research community, that is somehow considered anathema." - Dr.@macaqtivist

I'm helping the BBC with a new landmark series on terrestrial invertebrates. If there are any fascinating stories you know of or that you're working on, please get in touch. Pls RT.
Possibly the most significant achievement is that manifestly healthy vegetarians and vegans are everywhere. This means the industry cannot argue that meat is necessary for human health.
Looking forward to teaching 5 weeks on animal ethics this term. There'll be no retreading of the old "rights vs. welfare" divisions - instead a focus on what I see as the most promising future directions. 🐟🐝🐕🐙
A UK judicial review will assess whether planners can legitimately ignore fish welfare when approving fish farms - good to see a spotlight on this issue. 🐟 https://t.co/QjHldn4QlJ
I wrote an opinion piece about the labelling of animal products and why we need to be more open about what the UK's animal welfare standards permit

This was indeed one of our findings, but one that I challenge the respondents on! More interesting results on how welfare scientists see their aims, priorities and problems coming (hopefully) soon
There's an agro-economics problem here but also a reliance on a very minimal account of what it takes to treat someone humanely. Motivated reasoning always seems to be the thing that holds these types of arguments together
I'm more concerned by animal suffering than killing animals. My current view is "humane-itarianism": buy small amounts of animal products from highest welfare farmers, as this will influence the market to improve welfare standards more so than not buying any animal products.
Save The Date-The second meeting of the Philosophy of Animal Minds and Behavior Association will be held at the University of Santa Barbara April 24-26 2025. Colin Allen is hosting talks and events including a tour of @CoalOilPoint Natural Reserve to observe plovers. Stay tuned!
A common narrative in animal welfare crowds is that a gentle carrot-led relationship with industry is the best/right/only means by which to improve welfare.
@AnimalRising's exposé on @rspcaassured farms puts pressure on this narrative. Perhaps it's time to reexamine our approach
I'll celebrate when you drop the RSPCA Assured scheme, which normalises and legitimises the industrial abuse of animals, and focus instead on persuading your members to switch to an animal-free diet. Until that point, you're part of the problem.
