Thailand Enters El Niño Phase, Drought Risk Rises
The Department of Climate Change and Environment says there is a 96–98% chance that El Niño will develop between June and July 2026 and continue into early 2027.
The agency warned that rainfall is likely to be below normal across much of the country from June 2026 to January 2027, increasing drought risks and reducing water availability. Southern Thailand may also receive less rain during its wet season in December and January.
Temperatures are expected to be slightly above average, with a warmer-than-usual winter between December 2026 and February 2027. The government is expanding climate forecasting and developing high-resolution climate risk maps to support planning for droughts, floods and other climate-related impacts.
