Dr. Zechariah Haber, Israeli Scientist Killed in Gaza, Leaves Behind Breakthrough That Will Help Feed Millions

Dr. Zechariah Haber ז”ל was a husband, father of three, IDF reservist, and brilliant scientist whose final discovery will help transform global agriculture.

While pursuing his Ph.D. at Tel Aviv University, Haber identified the gene responsible for controlling wheat seed size. Building on his work, researchers discovered that modifying this gene produces larger, heavier wheat grains with significantly higher levels of protein, essential amino acids, iron and zinc. Scientists believe the breakthrough could lead to more nutritious, drought-resistant wheat capable of feeding millions as climate change and population growth place increasing pressure on the world’s food supply.

Zechariah made aliyah from the United States with his family at the age of 8 and developed a deep love for Israel. Known by those closest to him as exceptionally gifted, his endless curiosity led him to dedicate his life to advancing agricultural science while remaining deeply devoted to his family, Torah, and the Land of Israel.

On October 7, although sick with a virus, he packed his gear and immediately rushed to his unit. His wife, Talia, later learned that his tank unit was among the very first to respond after the Hamas massacre.

Recalling their final months together, Talia said: “When he would come home from fighting, he was happy. We would throw the kids in the air, and we continued to live and play. Every time he came home, we would run around and travel the country together. We miss it so much.”

Called up for reserve duty on October 8, 2023, Zechariah served courageously in Gaza until he was killed in action on January 16, 2024.

On June 9, 2024, Tel Aviv University posthumously awarded him a Ph.D., ensuring his groundbreaking research would live on.

Dr. Haber is survived by his wife, Talia, and their three young children, the youngest just 3 years old.

Honest question, Minister @EvanLSolomon: why does an intelligent, good guy like you, with a background in communications, repeat the absurd cliché that “antisemitism has no place… anywhere in Canada?”

The opposite is obviously true.

By every metric, antisemitism has a large and growing place in Canada.

So can we please just drop that ridiculous bromide and start to confront the painful reality that we, as a society, have allowed history’s oldest and most pernicious hatred to metastasize in Canada?

Of course this is not reducible to a partisan question, but surely some responsibility for the sickening growth in antisemitism falls to the national government that has been in office for over a decade.

The government that, as a matter of policy, dropped the Harper government’s formal acknowledgement of the the uniquely pernicious and durable nature of antisemitism?

The government that has funded vile antisemites through parodic “anti racism” programs.

The government that rewarded the perpetrators of the deadliest pogrom of Jews since the Shoah with recognition of a non existant Palestinian “state.”

The government that restored and increased funding to one of the greatest sources of violent antisemitism: UNWRA, which poisons the minds of Palestinian children with Jew hatred.

A government that has done nothing to address the problem of rampant antisemitism in many of Canada’s universities, where scapegoating Israel as the “collective Jew” (to quote Irwin Cotler) has become commonplace.

And a government whose naive approach to multiculturalism, immigration, and integration is willfully blind to the sad but undeniable reality that antisemitism is deeply embedded in certain cultures.

To all of those in office: enough with the cliches every time there is a new outrage targeting the Jewish community.

Real leadership is required, which means risking and spending political capital.

A Ukrainian suicide drone struck a crowded beach in Russia, killing 4 and wounding 13.

I will NOT criticize Ukraine and I’ll say so openly. This is a war they did not start and though those killed in this strike are civilians, that is an unfortunate consequence of war.
