Reports from #Iran and across the entire #MiddleEast continue to cause deep dismay and raise the fear that the conflict will expand, and that other countries in the region, including dear Lebanon, may once again sink into instability. Let us #PrayTogether for the roar of bombs to cease, weapons to fall silent, and space to open for dialogue, in which people's voices may be heard.
Pleased to have completed a 9 day technical visit to #Sudan.
Thank you to the Ministry of Social Welfare of Sudan for hosting me and facilitating the visit, and to all interlocutors that I have met with, including local and central authorities, host communities, UN agencies and NGOs.
I was particularly grateful to have had the chance to visit four locations in three States hosting civilians affected by the conflict are: The Northern State, Khartoum and Gezira.
No report I had read could have adequately prepared me for what I have heard and seen. I am shocked and shaken by the horrific experiences and immense suffering of women and girls i met with. They had mainly fled El Fasher and Kordofan, while others had remained confined in Khartoum and Wad Madani when they were under RSF control.
Their needs, and those of millions of others across Sudan remain immense, as the humanitarian response continues to be severely underfunded. This must be urgently reversed.
Women and girls survivors of sexual and gender based violence in particular urgently need to have access to justice, basic services, legal aid, effective protection and assistance to avoid remaining trapped in a vicious cycle of trauma and revictimization. The atrocities committed against all women and girls must stop and so must the impunity for these crimes.
I have shared my initial findings and recommendations with the Minister of Social Affairs and other line ministries before departure and will be following up in writing.
My article on the emerging “right to care” has just been published in the @Yale Journal of International Law. More on that and my responses to possible objections here:

Reports of RSF executions in Darfur’s El Fasher piles agony upon agony, horror upon horror, death upon death. The impotence of the UN and the scandalous failure of the international community to implement the duty to protect is a shocking indictment of the world in which we now live.

Leaders of Gaza’s Christian community said in a joint statement released on August 26 that the forced displacement would amount to “nothing less than a death sentence." (...)

Church leaders’ decision to stay in Gaza City has inspired many Palestinian Christians at the Holy Family Church to stay despite rising fears of Israeli attacks https://t.co/KZgACnniCW
"The practice of surrogacy is characterized by exploitation and violence against women and children, including girls. It reinforces patriarchal norms by commodifying and objectifying women’s bodies and exposing surrogate mothers and children to serious human rights violations."
My upcoming report on “The different manifestations of violence against women and girls in the context of #surrogacy” (A/80/158) and which I will present to the #UNGA in October 2025 is now available in the six UN languages on this link: https://t.co/Y384q8ogVZ
Extraordinary statement from the ICRC President:
"The level of suffering inflicted on civilians because of warfare conducted indiscriminately and the extreme deprivation of the essentials for survival is abhorrent."
Starvation, degrading treatment, the killing of civilians are not "complicated issues." To speak and act against them, you don't need to be an "expert," it's enough to be a human being.
🚨 Starvation is spreading in #Gaza.
This is 6 month old Salam.
Suffering from severe acute malnutrition, she arrived at a @UNRWA clinic for treatment. She died later that evening.
Israel must enable safe and unimpeded aid delivery and open all crossings.

War does not solve problems; on the contrary, it amplifies them and inflicts deep wounds on the history of peoples, which take generations to heal. No armed victory can compensate for the pain of mothers, the fear of children, or stolen futures. May diplomacy silence the weapons! May nations chart their futures with works of peace, not with violence and bloodstained conflicts!
🔴Every year, millions are forced to flee - not by choice, but by necessity. War, persecution, violence, discrimination, climate change.
This #WorldRefugeeDay, we share the journeys of Innocent, Barwako, Safia & Pout. Their stories show what’s at stake and what’s possible when people are met with safety, dignity & the chance to begin again.
