I will tolerate recurrent laryngeal nerve slander no longer! It's actually the result of several elegant solutions to difficult problems in embryology, and the length is a non-issue. A 🧵 1/13
@thedavenelson Mollick’s point was the type of usage we’re seeing isn’t as a tutor but as an automated task machine and that isn’t helpful to student learning. A user has to know how to work the interface to produce a tutoring session otherwise the AI simply offloads learning by answering.
The shocking (but also totally not shocking) point raised at last night’s OpenAI Education Forum were the majority of their global 250 million weekly users are students. Their CFO noted a 90% up tick in ChatGPT usage in the Philippines once the school year began.
F-betyget skrotas!!!

Air purifiers in Finnish daycare reduced children's illnesses by 18% in a carefully controlled study. This implies huge potential for better public health and cost savings from sick leaves, with a simple intervention against airborne infections.

Biodiversiy is declining, yet we have limited knowledge about how that affects human well-being. My work linking bats, insecticide use, and human infant health is out today in Science (https://t.co/gNIbWRdqEj), and tells a complex story about how those are connected.
This is a great example of several things:
the importance of ecological services
the potential harms of widespread synthetic chemical use
how industrial systems can never be more thermodynamically efficient than natural systems
I am running out of words to describe how absurd August 2024 was in Svalbard.
Reaching an average temperature of 11°C in August would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. This is totally bonkers.
🚨Longyearbyen (Svalbard) in the Arctic (78°N) measures its warmest summer after record shattering August.🚨
🌡️With an average temperature of 8.6°C, Longyearbyen measures its 3rd consecutive record warm summer.
The summer of 2024 breaks last year’s record by a large margin.

Don't use Sci-Hub — it's a "controversial" website with 84M+ research papers freely available.
We should all try to make billion-dollar academic publishers richer.
Anyway, here's a thread on how to integrate Sci-Hub with Zotero 7 to get free papers.
DO NOT DO IT!
Det är inte det minsta svårt att förstå varför Gunnar Strömmer gjorde karriär genom att försvara individens rättigheter gentemot staten tills han fick makt över staten.
