Too many leaders focus on making better decisions when instead they should focus on designing better decision-making processes.
Design the process, decentralized the decisions.
We have choices:
1. be likable in our silent agreement (people-pleasing fear)
3. be respected in our courageous disagreement (courageous action)
One optimizes for ego and reputation, the other optimizes for the truth.
One optimizes for the short-term, the other for the long-term
In an age of ubiquitous information, a premium is placed on contextual knowledge.
When you can access everything, all the time, the advantage accrues to those who can:
1) curate ubiquitous knowledge into signal vs. noise
2) apply the right/best knowledge to the context
I've always been struck by how upstream of the best strategy, analysis, and positioning, most decisions are a function of personality, posture, and stories of self of those in leadership.
Upstream of strategy, there is always psychology.
