That's a wrap on another year of making art! I made 52 objects this year, one per week, and learned a ton. In 2023 I'm going to dive more deeply into some of the ideas I explored this year by creating and sharing some work each month instead of each week. #weeklyart
An invisible but massive technology step forward is coming in our Draper software release. X10 will now use an in-house GNSS (GPS) solver. We’ll still use the same GPS hardware, but now the math and algorithms that use satellite signals to determine the robot's location are written and controlled by Skydio. There is a mountain of math and magic that goes into these solvers, and basically, all drones just use the solvers that come with the receivers because of the enormous complexity involved. But by writing our own algorithms, we can fuse the GPS signals with other data sources - like our visual estimation system and a deep learning-generated computer vision segmentation mask that tells us which satellites are occluded by buildings or trees - to get better accuracy and robustness, and make our products that much more capable and reliable.
“Always just works” is the goal, and there is a deep sea of technology and a long tail of vertical integration it takes to make that happen.
Congratulations to the (tiny) elite team at @SkydioHQ that pulled this off.
@levelsio 1. Buy these from @adafruit : https://t.co/m4wYHMlT0w, https://t.co/7bRRL5Kcxd
2. Plug them into each other and your mac
3. Read the sensor and make something happen based on CO2 readings (start with turning LED on or display "Open window!" on screen).
4. Add motor control
@trq212 love to see the improvements! Any idea why I might have literally hundreds of "idle" and "archived" remote control sessions listed in the ios app? I can just scroll through them forever..
In the last week, we announced a $ 110M Series F investment into Skydio and a $3.5B investment by Skydio into the US drone R&D and manufacturing ecosystem. The spread between the money being invested into Skydio vs. what we’re investing into the ecosystem speaks to the incredible demand for the Flying Robot Infrastructure that we build.
@SkydioHQ is now the rarest of birds - a US drone company with a strong core business and hypergrowth - something many thought was impossible not too long ago. We’re nearing the end of our outside capital needs and massively scaling our investment in domestic R&D, supply chain, and manufacturing to meet the needs of our customers and help pioneer the next chapter of US industry.
I recently hit 5 years at @SkydioHQ and I can confidently say I've never learned more or had this much fun at a job. Lots of roles open in engineering. Join us!
There has never been an aerospace company moving as fast as Skydio on so many fronts. 3 reasons:
1. Now is the most exciting time in the history of the universe to build integrated HW/SW/AI aerospace products.
2. @SkydioHQ is unique in the talent of our team, our leadership position in the markets we serve, our level of vertical integration, and the resulting rapid growth of our business.
3. There is still so much left to build.
Matias built Paraverse – a ray-traced simulator that enables our full autonomy stack to run with simulated images using our actual, highly non-linear camera models in real time.
Engineers use this to test new algorithms the moment they're written, our sales team uses it to fly with customers anywhere in the world, and customers train and maintain proficiency in a full digital replica of their own Skydio environment.
It exists because Matias saw a problem, imagined a better solution, and made it happen. Every good thing we’ve ever done at @SkydioHQ is downstream from an amazing person who did exactly this, and it happens all the time. We're hiring. (link in 🧵)
